Fear or Fascination: Clearwater’s Shark Encounters

View More ->

Have you heard that

Clearwater

is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the number of sunny days?

Therefore, the weather is almost always good here, which makes the city especially valuable for beach lovers.

The city is the spiritual center for the Church of Scientology.

Clearwater has a rich history and was the scene of the American Civil War.

You chose Clearwater as your vacation destination, but what about

the sharks there

?

Are there any of these scary creatures, and is it safe to swim?

People frequently ask themselves this before going to the beach.

Let me tell you the truth, then…

Are there Sharks in Clearwater?

Yes, there are sharks at

Clearwater Beach

.

Because all of

Florida’s beaches are home to several different shark

species.

Due to their propensity to stay away from humans and shallow water, they are quite uncommon to see.

They are as frightened of you as you are of them, which is typical of most creatures.

There are many sharks at

Clearwater Beach

because Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico both border Clearwater Beach on one side.

One of the shark-richest regions in the world is

Tampa Bay

.

You shouldn’t be concerned, though, as shark encounters are uncommon and you are unlikely to spot a shark while visiting Clearwater Beach unless you actively search for one, but you still have to be extremely careful.

What Sharks live in Clearwater?

There are three types of sharks off the coast: tiger, blue, blunt bull, and great

white sharks

.

They rarely hunt; rather, it is a reaction to the movements of numerous swimmers.

By studying the movements of three species of sharks, the blunt snout shark, the nurse shark, and the giant hammerhead shark, on the coast of Clearwater, scientists have found that marine predators spend a lot of time near the coast, as if not paying attention to the light, sound, and chemical pollution of sea water.

Perhaps, like many other animals, they were attracted to easily available food, such as leftover food thrown into the water and waste from

the fishing industry.

Are There Great White Sharks in Clearwater?

Yes, there was one great white shark spotted in Clearwater.

Researchers from OCEARCH, an international non-profit organization for the study of great white sharks, are carefully monitoring the predator, who has been named Miss Costa.

They can track the shark’s route thanks to signals from a beacon installed in 2016 on its dorsal fin.

According to experts, the visit of a great white shark to the Gulf of Mexico is an unusual phenomenon since, in the United States, these predators prefer the coasts of California, Hawaii, or the east coast.

Prior to this, in the Gulf of Mexico, except for Miss Costa, only two such large white sharks were noticed.

Clearwater Beach Shark Attack Stats

There have only been 14 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks in Pinellas County since 1882, according to

the International Shark Attack Files (ISAF)

, which includes Clearwater.

In other words, during the course of the last 140 years, only 14

shark attacks

have been documented in Pinellas County, which includes Clearwater Beach.

14 is a fairly modest number when compared to the average of 6.

5 million visitors to Clearwater Beach each year.

In other words, your chances of being hurt during a tornado in Clearwater are higher than your chances of being attacked by sharks.

How late can you swim at Clearwater Beach?

Clearwater Beach is open 24/7, although, as I mentioned above, I do not recommend swimming after dark.

Lifeguards are not on duty at night.

At sunset, a lot of tourists swim in the Gulf of Mexico, but the activity dies down shortly after the sun sets.

I do not recommend you swim at night because the water is already cooling at this time of day, and a person can cramp his arms or legs.

Secondly, there are no lifeguards on the beach at night, so in case of an emergency, no one will help.

Even if they are, they are still useless since it is difficult to see vacationers in the dark.

Thirdly, various dangerous marine life, including jellyfish, are getting closer to the shore.

Not all of them are deadly, but a meeting with them will clearly be remembered for a long time and ruin your vacation.

Given all of the above, we must remember that night is not the best time for swimming.
