I will be talking about the beautiful Lewes Beach in this article.

Unlike Cocoa Beach, which most people love visiting, Lewes Beach is not very popular.

What is Lewes beach known for?

Before I answer the question,  here are some of the things you can do in and around Lewes beach:

What is Lewes <a href=

Lightship Overfalls

Over 150 lightships were built along the mid-Atlantic coast from the early 19th century to the mid 20th century.

Remarkably, the Lightship Overfalls is one of the few remaining and has been opened for public tours after major renovations.

This ship has been listed on the National Register of historic places for close to a decade.

This ship was mainly used as a moveable lighthouse to help warm ships of dangerous reefs and how close these ships were to land at night.

It also helped inform ships at sea, especially at night when the visibility was low.

Seasonally, the ship is opened, and professional guided tours are provided for visitors.

Cape May-Lewes Ferry

The distance between Cape May, New Jersey and Lewes is less than 20 miles across the Delaware bay.

With the Cape May-Lewes ferry, it takes about 90 minutes to get across the bay, and riders are provided with the most scenic ocean and land vistas they are likely to see during their trip.

This ferry can carry over 600 passengers at once, and it can haul nearly 100 cars.

It also included outdoor and indoor seating, hot and cold drinks, and light refreshments.

During the trip, you can spot some dolphins and different species of marine birds.

Doors of Fame

One thing Rehoboth beach and Lewes have in common is their thriving art scenes.

These two towns have beautiful galleries which highlight some of the works from both regional and local artists in the area.

The Doors of Fame is located at the headquarters of the Rehoboth Art League and is an impressive art attraction with multiple doors inscribed with names of artists from way back to the 30s (when the league was founded).

Some regional art connoisseurs will not have a hard time recognising some of the notable names there.

The permanent exhibits in the League are worth checking out as well as the sculptures and paintings.

Junction & Breakwater Trail

Stretching for about six miles between Lewes beach and Cape Henlopen state, the Junction and Breakwater Trail follows the route of a presently disused railroad which was formerly the primary means of transportation in the state in the 17th and 18th century.

This trail winds its way through several natural environments, such as forests, fields, and coastal marshlands.

It is open to the public including walkers, bikers and runners and it is also free to use.

Since this trail is quite flat, many families travelling with children and also adults who aren’t in the best of shape prefer this trail.

Delaware Seashore State Park

Generally, beaches in Delaware and resort towns are quieter and less developed, unlike neighboring Maryland.

The Delaware Seashore State Park comprises nearly 3,000 acres along the coast and is a short drive from Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.

Many surfers and anglers are familiar with this park and it is a great spot for activities such as swimming and sunbathing

In the fall, surf fishing is very common as this is the period when striped bass are more active.

You can drive your car and pack at specific areas on the beach.

Every year, this park hosts several entertaining events like the Sandcastle Building Contest in July.

Cape Henlopen State Park

In Lewes Beach, Cape Henlopen State Park is one of the area’s biggest outdoor recreation destinations.

Every year, this park opens from sunrise to sunset from the beginning of March to the end of November.

Some of the popular park pastimes include:

  • Swimming
  • Fishing
  • Surfing
  • Biking

People who rather spend the night watching the stars at a comfortable hotel can opt for ample campsites.

The beaches in this park usually gets very busy and crowded during peak times but unlike those found in Rehoboth beach, these are more laid back and less developed.

During peak times, the park’s beaches can get crowded, but they’re decidedly more laid-back and less developed than those found in Rehoboth Beach.

You should definitely check out the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse and get ready to enjoy some of the festivals which are held in this park every year.

Cannonball House

Lewes’ Cannonball House is particularly for people who love travelling on a budget.

Here, you can get a historical overview of the area without spending too much.

The Cannonball House is located on Front street just near the downtown area.

Originally built around the mid 1700s, this historic house has offered significant roles and is now known to be the home of the town’s historical society.

This house opens daily and admission is around a few bucks per individual.

It is full of interesting exhibits that touch on the Revolutionary War and the Bombardment of the town by the British during the war of 1812.

The house is open daily, and admission is just a few bucks per person.

Pirates of Lewes

For families with little kids, the Pirates Of Lewes is an amazing unique area attraction that provides family tours.

These tours usually last for over an hour.

Families are taken on a tour in a massive boat with enthusiastic and safety-conscious employees, so you do not have to worry about safety.

Some of the activities in Pirates Of Lewes which will linger in your children’s memories for a lifetime include:

  • Water fights
  • Treasure hunts
  • Sing-alongs

For every four children on this tour, at least one adult chaperone is provided so you can be rest assured that your children are safe.

It is important to note that they can quickly run out of tickets during the peak season, so you can book in advance.
