Does Florida Have Seasons?

Where is Florida? I know many people outside the United States want to know where Florida is located.

Florida is one of the states located in Southeastern United States. It overlooks the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west as it extends from 24-31 degrees north latitude.

Does Florida Have Seasons?

Does Florida have seasons? If you are coming to Florida for the first time, here is what I will tell you.

Weather in Florida

The climate in Florida is subtropical. There are mild winters mainly consisting of short cold spells and hot summers.

The summer period starts in June and ends in September, although this period is quite muggy with occasional thunderstorms.

The far south of Florida, where Miami is located, has a tropical climate with the average temperature reaching 20 °C in January. Florida is susceptible to encountering hurricanes during summer and early autumn.

The temperature in Florida during the summer is usually uniform from North to South mostly during the daytime ranging from 31 °C and 33 °C (88 °F and 91 °F). As you head towards the south at night, the temperature becomes warmer ranging from 21 °C (70 °F) in the far north to 27 °C (81 °F) in the Keys.

On the other hand, the temperature change during winter is quite different. The daily average temperature in January typically ranges from 11 °C (52 °F) in the north to 20 °C (68 °F) in the far south.

Below is an overview of the average minimum and maximum temperatures in January in some locations

Average temperatures in January in Florida

During the summer, there’s usually a lot of sun but cloudiness can still form. If more or less extended, it can lead to thunderstorms that may be followed by wind gusts and sometimes hail.

Regardless, thunderstorms experienced during this period last for a short period and the weather becomes sunny again. Among all the states in the US, Florida is the state that is mostly affected by lightning.

Compared to the Great Plains and the Midwest of the United States, Florida is more prone to tornadoes. At times, due to abrupt intrusions of cold air,  there may be intense tornadoes occurring during winter or spring.

June to November Weather Condition

From June to November, hurricanes and tropical storms happen although they are more likely to occur from August to October.

In August-September 1935, a very serious hurricane hit Florida. It was known as the Labour Day hurricane. Because the atom surges come from the sea, coastal areas are at higher risk of being hit by a hurricane.

Sunshine in Florida is one of the best things about this Stat, which enjoys a good amount of sun that shines all year round. This has earned Florida the nickname “The Sunshine State”.

The North has lesser sun than the South and you will find out that the sun shines 60% of the time in Pensacola, 66% of the time in Tampa and 70% of the time in Miami.

In Florida, the sunniest months in the South are Match and April. In the North, the sunniest months ante April and May, while the least sunny season is during winter, even though there is still a good amount of sunshine in this season.

Best Time to Visit

If you’d like to travel to any city in South Florida, the best time to do that is from December to April. Miami is very warm during the winter and is apparently the most sheltered place in the whole US.

The risk of getting a cold in the Center north is high especially since the rains occur more often. If you’d like to travel to any city in the center North, the best time to do so would be during spring and autumn (precisely March-April and October-November). You should however note that hurricanes can still happen in autumn.

In the south, you can still go out to swim, as the sea is warm enough in the winter. You can choose to go to the south from mid-March to late April. In May, you can feel the heat and there are more thunderstorms. This is not enough to stop you from going on a beach holiday.

My Opinion: Does Florida Have Seasons?

Generally, there are two main seasons in Southeast Florida. These are:

Summer:

The summer period is usually warm with thunderstorms and frequent showers

Winter:

Unlike the summer season, the winter season has cooler temperatures, less showers and lower humidity levels.

Because of the high level of humidity in summer seasons, the heat becomes uncomfortable and intense periods of heat can also be experienced with highs about 37/38 °C (99/100 °F).

I feel a lot better thanks to the afternoon breezes and thunderstorms or I can decide to cool off by swimming in the sea or taking refuge in air-conditioned buildings.

On average, you may experience 8 or 9 days of rainfall in the north and 6 or 7 days of rainfall in the center south during winter. Due to the frontal system caused by a clash of air masses usually accompanied by wind and cold temperature, rain occurs.

Cold spells are rare and may be felt from late November to mid-March.

Snow is not common in the Northern part of Florida but it can still happen. Fogs usually form on winter nights from the north. In the southern part, including cities like Miami, snow does not occur, while in the central part (including Orlando), snow is quite rare.
