Okay, I need to talk about forest bathing retreats because they are criminally underrated.

The Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku — essentially, slow, intentional time in the forest — has been studied extensively for its ability to lower cortisol, reduce blood pressure, and genuinely improve mood.

Sleep retreats are exactly what they sound like, and no, it’s not just an excuse to take a nap.

These are structured programs built specifically around restoring your sleep quality through a combination of science-backed sleep coaching, behavioral therapy, and environmental optimization.

I went to one after a stretch where I was waking up at 4 a.m.

every single night, heart racing, brain already running.

The Practical Stuff: What to Pack and How to Prepare

Nobody really talks about the logistics of a wellness retreat and then people show up totally unprepared.

So here’s what I’ve learned through trial and error.

Pack light.

Seriously.

Most retreats have a very simple dress code — comfortable layers, good walking shoes, maybe a swimsuit.

You don’t need much.

Leave the laptop at home.

Even if the retreat isn’t a digital detox, lugging your work with you defeats the entire purpose.

Give yourself a transition day on either side of the retreat if you can.

Arriving frantic and leaving straight into a Monday morning meeting kills the experience.

Drink more water than you think you need.

Most retreat environments — mountains, desert, intensive movement — are dehydrating.

And go in with low expectations and high openness.

The retreats that surprised me most were the ones I went into without a clear agenda.
