Short answer: pick Cocoa Beach for surfing and rocket launches, and Daytona Beach for racing, a boardwalk and driving on the sand.

Cocoa Beach is a small town of about 11,000 people on the Space Coast.

Daytona Beach is a city of almost 73,000 best known for its beach and motorsports, and on most of that beach you can still drive your car, at 10 mph.

I rewrote this comparison in October 2026.

The old version called New Smyrna Beach “the best place to stay in Daytona Beach” (it’s a separate town), gave Daytona’s beach as both 23 miles and 8 miles, and never said the one thing that actually decides this: what you want to do when you’re not lying down.

Cocoa Beach: surf town near the launch pads

Cocoa Beach is surf culture first.

Ron Jon Surf Shop was pulling 2 million visitors a year as of 2006, the town has the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame, and the Easter Surfing Festival has run since 1964.

At Christmas, around 10,000 people come out to watch the Surfing Santas.

The pier is the center of town.

Built in 1962 as the Cape Canaveral Pier, it’s now the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier, and it stretches 800 feet over the Atlantic with a tiki hut at the end.

Then there’s the reason I’d pick Cocoa.

Kennedy Space Center is nearby.

If a launch lines up with your trip, you might get to see one.

Our rocket launch viewing planner lists the next Florida launches in your time zone and where to watch them.

Want empty sand?

North of the Space Center, Canaveral National Seashore has 24 miles of undeveloped beach, dunes and lagoon between Titusville and New Smyrna Beach.

Playalinda is its southern section.

Just know that access is often restricted around launches.

Daytona Beach: cars, races and the boardwalk

Daytona has been called “the World’s Most Famous Beach” since the 1920s, and cars are a big part of its story.

Races ran on the beach and road course for over 50 years, until Daytona International Speedway replaced them in 1959.

NASCAR’s headquarters are in town, and the Daytona 500 opens the season every February.

Bike Week in March and Biketoberfest together bring several hundred thousand bikers to the area.

The sand is hard-packed, with over 23 miles of public beaches in all.

Cars are allowed on most of it, at a maximum of 10 mph.

That’s great for families hauling gear, and a bit strange the first time you see it.

Driving on the sand isn’t free for visitors, though.

In 2024 Volusia County dropped the fee for residents and raised the nonresident day pass from $20 to $30, so a single beach day would cost me $30 before I even park.

The free resident pass was set to end on January 31, 2026 unless the county renewed it, so check the current price before you go.

Daytona’s spring break reputation has faded, too.

The city worked to discourage the rowdiness, and other spring break towns took the crowds.

So which one?

  • Surfers and space fans: Cocoa Beach, easily.
  • Race fans: Daytona. If you’ve booked for February, you’re there for Speedweeks, and so is everyone else.
  • Families with lots of gear: Daytona’s drive-on beach makes the day easier.
  • Quiet and nature: Cocoa Beach as a base, with a day at Canaveral National Seashore.

Honestly, I’d pick Cocoa Beach for a first trip, mostly for the launches.
