Kiribati, an island group in Micronesia is a perfect destination for making your holidays enjoyable compared to other pacific nations.
Kiribati is good for tourist as it is well known for its scenic and tribal beauty. This country has some unique characteristic that always attract the visitors.
I was lucky enough to have the chance enjoying holidays with my husband in Kiribati.
Dave and I enjoyed the holidays very much and we just can’t forget those beautiful days in Kiribati.
We selected Kiribati for our holidays, because we just wanted to get rid of all sorts of hassles of our daily life and wanted to taste the adventurous beauty of Kiribati.
It was really a wonderful time for the couple like us.
Kiribati, a former part of the British Gilbert and Ellice Islands, got independence from the United Kingdom in 1979.
Kiribati consists of mainly three widely separated groups.
They are the Gilbert Islands, the Line Islands and the Phoenix Island.
Tarawa is the capital of Kiribati and most of the population lives in the Gilbert Islands.
It is mainly situated between Hawaii and Australia.
Best things to do in Kiribati
We got into Kiribati with the flight on Air Marshall.
We landed on Tarawa Island.
Then we booked a room in Mary’s Motel to stay.
It is the best hotel in Kiribati so far I know.
The room was clean and had the facilities of air conditioning and showers.
There was a restaurant nearby where we took our lunch with soups and local fish dishes.
We found that meat dishes were very much uncomfortable.
There was internet connection in the hotel, though speed was not too fast.
The hotel was a distant place from the airport and that’s why we had to suffer a little.
However, the hotel was good indeed than the others.
Then we set our journey to visit the Kiribati National Library and Archives.
We had found that all types of relics and staffs are gathered here to give information on the history.
It was a good source of information for the learners.
We enjoyed it very much because of our interest.
Then we went to the Parliament building which is near to the library.
It was very attractive and we were amazed.

Then we went to the South Tarawa.
It was one of the densely populated areas in the world.
The beach in South Tarawa gave us the moment to express our love to each other and that’s why we loved the beach.
We bought some local handicrafts from there.
We found the situation was not so good for the tourists.

My Kiribati Vacation Experience

The next day we started our journey to visit the North Tarawa.
Atolls are ideal places for a good bike ride, since no transport cars are available to explore this wonderful island, we decided to rent scooters to get us a lot further and see more of the flat atolls in the Northern part of Tarawa.
Our main aim was to enjoy the village life in Kiribati.
We found a lot of guesthouses and conventional accommodation were available there than South Tarawa.
My favorite Kiribati tourist attractions
Then we head off to visit Ambo Island, one of the three attractions of the Tarawa atoll.
It has a beautiful beach and the famous Ambo Lagoon Club that offers swimming, volleyball and other outdoor activities.
It has pure white sand and nice scenery, but there were so many whole and broken shells and it was almost impossible to find a place to lie down.
By afternoon we checked out the Parliament Building which sits on a reclaimed land in Ambo Island.
The building is a stylized version of a Kiribati hut.
Just in front of the building is the map of Kiribati which gives visitors an idea of the vastness of the area over which the islands are scattered.
On the fourth day we started our journey again.
We just visited the Kiribati amusement club for a while.
And we enjoyed that.
Then we took a 4 hour boat ride to get to Abaiang, this village offers a more traditional approach and gave a more rural impression of Kiribati than Tarawa.
We found a coconut farm, where farmers are busy harvesting, cutting them open, drying them, etc.
such a meticulous process to have coconut oil!
Lots of tribal villages are the main reason of the scenic beauty around there.
My trip to Kiribati Highlights
We also bought some handicraft items from a craft shop.
My husband took lots of photographs of that tribal village.
We spent a couple of hours with the children of that tribal village and we learnt many things from them.
We also visited a Catholic Church before heading back to the island.
My husband and I planned to go to Kiribati (Christmas Island) because many people told us that conditions are better there than the other countries.
It was the largest coral atoll in the world.
It is made up of lots of lagoons and miles of coral sand that makes Kiribati unique.
My wife took some beautiful photographs of that and we were really amazed to see such natural beauty.
The scenic beauty and abundant tourist attractions of Kiribati are worth-mentioning.
So far we know Kiribati was one of the three huge phosphate rock islands in the Pacific.
We saw remnants of the Japanese military occupation.
I was in awe that such WW2 armaments were kept intact like, eight inch guns, anti – aircraft guns, remains of some tanks and ruins of bunkers.
I wonder why their government is not doing anything to move out such things, it was visibly rusting and the corrosion goes to the waters.
What else to do in Kiribati?
Best Kiribati scenery
We knew that Kiribati was popular for its world class bone fishing.
We enjoyed bird watching and surfing facilities very much.
That’s why we both enjoyed that vacation very much.
In fact, I am also fond of surfing and that’s why I loved Kiribati.
One thing I don’t understand is that why there is little tourism in Kiribati.
This place is beautiful, but still, not much tourists are attracted to Kiribati.
We managed to find a hotel named “Captain Cook Hotel” there and stayed for just a night.
The room was not well enough, but it was the best hotel in this Island.
The place was very remote, but natural beauty was available here and there.
We enjoyed our journey in Kiribati, because of the scenic beauty.
It was really fascinating and I loved that particular Island especially.

Popular places to visit in Kiribati
We walked along all the streets and tried to view the scenery.
We saw many thatched huts.
In the Island there are lots of coconut and palm trees.
We visited their local markets for shopping.
We talked with the local people and we had found that they were very much simple and jolly.
After that we started our journey towards Betio Island with a local flight.
Actually that island contains the historical part of the war that took place in the year of 1943.
There were lots of fishing activity at the Betio Harbor.
This is where most fishing boats go to cross the outer atolls.
I learned from a local fisherman that Kiribati makes a fair amount of its revenue from concessions to Japanese fishing vessels to fish on its waters.
Then we went to the golf courses and enjoyed a lot.
The beaches of that Island were really attractive and charming.
My final tourist attractions in Kiribati
Kiribati’s economy is based mainly on tourism.
I can never neglect the enchanting scenery of this beautiful Island.
Though there were lots of limitations, but the local people were very much co-operative.
The beach, the reefs, the lagoons gave us a lot of fun and we were very much happy to capture these happy moments with our camera.
Sitting back by the water was a good way for us to spend romantic time.
It was indeed a memorable vacation for us.
