Those who rent a car in the USA will face toll roads, of which there are a lot in the USA.

Those who drive on them for the first time as drivers will face certain difficulties.

So, E-ZPass is an electronic toll system in the northeastern United States.

You can pay for the fare either using a special device that you need to buy and install on the windshield or in cash.

That’s what this article will be about: how to understand toll road systems in the USA.

Is E-ZPass Accepted in all US states?

No, E-ZPass can be used in the following states:

Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine, and Florida

Is E-Pass in Florida the Same as E-ZPass?

No.

E-ZPass is a multi-state electronic toll pass that works in states from North Carolina to Maine and west to Illinois, and now in the entire state of Florida.

You do not need to pay extra fees—just tolls.

As for E-Pass, it won’t work where E-ZPass works.

It works only in Florida.

SunPass, E-Pass, or LeeWay are interoperable, which means that all toll roads and bridges that accept one of the passes accept the other two passes.

Recently, the Florida Expressway Authority, in partnership with E-ZPass, released a multi-state toll transponder called Uni Pass, which can work everywhere E-ZPass and E-PASS are accepted.

If you use both an E-ZPass and an E-Pass, you can be charged twice.

If you have more than one transponder, I advise you to take the E-ZPass transponder out of your car or put it in an RF shield bag before traveling into Florida to prevent the chance of getting charged by both transponders.

Is E-ZPass Accepted in Florida?

Yes, but if you stay only in Florida, it is better for you to get a SunPass.

As a rule, most transponders work on the vast majority of toll roads, but there are exceptions.

For example, I own EZ Pass transponders with which I can travel all over the US East Coast, including Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and West Virginia, and my system works in Florida too, so it means I will not have to search for other payment methods.

How Do I get an E-ZPass in Florida?

You can get it online, over the phone, or at drive-up reload lines on toll roads.

Can You Drive Into NYC without an E-ZPass?

Yes.

Cash Payment, Post Fare, and Pay Now… No matter how you pay, you can use any line for driving.

If the car is rented, then the device is already installed there, but you will have to pay an additional amount for its use.

At Hertz, for example, it’s $25.

So we decided to save money and pay in cash.

But it turned out to not be so easy.

Firstly, when approaching the payment points, you need to quickly orient yourself and change lanes to the right lane, where it says E-ZPass tickets, cash, exact change, or coins only.

If you have a device, go straight to E-ZPass only; there are usually many more of these points.

On some roads, for cars without E-ZPass, there are only windows with tickets; you drive up there, and a special machine gives you a ticket.

It was this option that we came across on the first road.

What is remarkable is that what to do with it further is not clear.

Well, we took it and drove off.

Approaching the next road, we saw that people were already sitting in booths and could pay for the fare.

It turned out that the early ticket issued should be given here, and you will be told the required amount.

A funny situation with the Coins Only option is that there is such a machine where you need to throw coins.

One machine was either broken or something else, but the inscription Paid was not highlighted.

I must say that the cost was a penny—50 cents—and it would be stupid to get a fine for unpaid travel.

With the device itself, if you buy it, there are also glitches—well, as with any technology.

If you want to pay in cash, then it is better to stock up on change; it will definitely come in handy.
