Quick answer: on flights within the US, a first checked bag costs $45 each way on Southwest, Delta, Alaska and Hawaiian, on American if you pay online ($50 at the airport) and on JetBlue off-peak; between Hawaii’s islands, $30. A second bag runs $40–$60. A bag over 50 lb adds $100 or more. Frontier, Allegiant and Breeze price bags by route and date, and United only through its own calculator.
How to use it
Pick your airline and how many bags you will check. If a bag is heavy or big, add its weight and its length + width + height: overweight and oversize fees come on top of the bag fee. Say whether you will pay online in advance or at the airport, since some airlines charge less in advance. The table under the tool prices the same bags on every airline, so you can see the difference before you book.
The fees
Flights within the US, economy, per bag, each way, read on each airline’s own page on 2026-09-19 (Southwest, Alaska and Hawaiian on 2026-10-01: Alaska and Hawaiian now share one bag policy and one fee table, for tickets bought on or after April 10, 2026). JetBlue is shown at its off-peak price; the calculator also has its peak prices. Bag fees change often (American changed its fees twice in 2026), so the tool prints the date it last checked.

A dash means the airline’s page does not give that fee in a form we could read; the calculator says so instead of guessing. On American, Basic Economy tickets pay $5 more for the first and second bag. Southwest’s prices are for travel “booked and ticketed and/or changed on or after April 9, 2026”; an older, unchanged ticket pays $35 and $45. On Alaska and Hawaiian, a bag both overweight and oversize pays both fees (“Overweight and Oversize fees compound with base bag fees, and with each other”); “within Hawaii” is their fee for “Passengers traveling wholly in the state of Hawaii”. Spirit Airlines stopped flying on May 2, 2026.
Free checked bags: the cards, status and fares
Every airline here waives bag fees for some travellers. Pick yours in “A card, status or fare that frees bags” under the answer and the calculator drops those bags (only bags within the weight and size limits: an overweight or oversize bag pays as usual). The number is how many of your first bags are free, each way, on the airline’s own flights within the US. American’s and Delta’s were read on their own pages on 2026-10-04: an eligible AAdvantage credit card frees the first bag on “domestic American Airlines operated itineraries”, and Delta’s SkyMiles American Express cards free the first bag for the card member and “up to 8 travel companions” on the same reservation, plus a second for the Basic Card Member on domestic Delta-operated flights. United prices its bags by route only, so it is not in the table.

United prices its bag fees by route, so the calculator cannot show its total, but its free bags are fixed. A United Explorer Card frees the first bag for the cardmember and one companion, and a United Club Card the first two. Premier Silver gets 1 free bag, Gold 2, Platinum and 1K 3 on flights within the Americas, more on the long routes, and “If you’re a Premier member, you and up to nine others on the same itinerary can check bags for free.” United Business, United First and Polaris seats also come with free bags.
Worked examples
A family of four on Southwest, one bag each
Four bags on one reservation are four first bags: 4 × $45 = $180 each way, $360 round trip. A Rapid Rewards credit cardmember’s first bag is free, and so is the first bag of up to eight people on the same reservation.
Two bags on American, paid at the airport
$50 + $60 = $110 each way. Paid online in advance it is $45 + $55 = $100: $20 saved on a round trip.
Two bags from Honolulu to Maui on Hawaiian
Within Hawaii: $30 + $40 = $70 each way, $140 round trip. The same two bags from Los Angeles to Honolulu are $45 + $55 = $100 each way.
One 60 lb bag on Delta
$45 for the bag plus $100 for 51–70 lb: $145 each way. Moving 10 lb into a carry-on saves the $100.
Common mistakes
- Paying at the counter. American and JetBlue charge less when you add bags in advance.
- A bag at 51 lb. One pound over 50 costs $100 on Delta, Southwest, Alaska and Hawaiian and $150 on JetBlue. Weigh it at home.
- Counting the round trip once. Bag fees are charged each way, so double them.
- Paying as active-duty military. Most airlines check a service member’s bags free with a military ID, on leave and on orders: see the Military Baggage Allowance by airline.
- Checking a bag that would fit in the cabin. Use the airline bag size checker to see if yours can fly as a carry-on.
