Quick answer: on flights within the US, a first checked bag costs $35 on Southwest, $45 on Delta, $45 on American if you pay online ($50 at the airport) and $45 on JetBlue off-peak, each way. A second bag runs $45–$60. A bag over 50 lb adds $100 or more. Frontier, Allegiant and Breeze price bags by route and date, and United only through its own calculator.

Say whether you will pay online in advance or at the airport, since some airlines charge less in advance. The fees
Flights within the US, economy, per bag, each way, read on each airline’s own page on 2026-09-19. JetBlue is shown at its off-peak price; the calculator also has its peak prices. Bag fees change often (American changed its fees twice in 2026), so the tool prints the date it last checked.

A dash means the airline’s page does not give that fee in a form we could read; the calculator says so instead of guessing. On American, Basic Economy tickets pay $5 more for the first and second bag. Spirit Airlines stopped flying on May 2, 2026.
Worked examples
A family of four on Southwest, one bag each
Four bags on one reservation are four first bags: 4 × $35 = $140 each way, $280 round trip. A Rapid Rewards credit cardmember’s first bag is free, and so is the first bag of up to eight people on the same reservation.
Two bags on American, paid at the airport
$50 + $60 = $110 each way. Paid online in advance it is $45 + $55 = $100: $20 saved on a round trip.
One 60 lb bag on Delta
$45 for the bag plus $100 for 51–70 lb: $145 each way. Moving 10 lb into a carry-on saves the $100.
Common mistakes
- Paying at the counter. American and JetBlue charge less when you add bags in advance.
- A bag at 51 lb. One pound over 50 costs $100 on Delta and Southwest and $150 on JetBlue. Weigh it at home.
- Counting the round trip once. Bag fees are charged each way, so double them.
- Checking a bag that would fit in the cabin. Use the airline bag size checker to see if yours can fly as a carry-on.
