Quick answer: most US airlines take a carry-on up to 22 × 14 × 9 in, wheels and handles included, and a checked bag up to 62 linear inches and 50 lb. Personal items are where they differ: from 17 × 10 × 9 in on United to 18 × 14 × 8 in on American. In Europe and Canada the limits are in centimeters and a little smaller, so a US 22-inch roller is often too long there.
How to use the bag size checker
Measure your bag the way the gate agent will: stand it up, and measure the longest side, the width and the depth, with the wheels, the handle and any outside pockets. Type the three numbers in any order; the checker turns the bag to its best fit, the same way you would push it into a sizer. Add the packed weight if you want the weight limits checked too.

Worked examples
A 22 × 14 × 9 in roller
This is the classic US carry-on, and it fits the carry-on limit on American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue and WestJet for free, and on Frontier, Allegiant, Breeze and easyJet as a paid carry-on. It is too long for Air Canada (21.5 in), and a fraction over on Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Aer Lingus and Ryanair, whose 55 cm is 21.65 in. On those airlines expect it to be checked at the gate if anyone measures.
An 18 × 14 × 8 in under-seat bag
Sold as a “personal item” bag, it is one only on American, Frontier and Allegiant. United’s personal item is 17 × 10 × 9 in and JetBlue’s is 17 × 13 × 8 in, so on those it counts as your carry-on instead.
A 55 × 40 × 20 cm European cabin bag
Made for Ryanair’s 10 kg bag and Lufthansa’s cabin limit, it is too wide for most US airlines: 40 cm is 15.7 in, and American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Breeze allow 14 in. It fits Southwest’s larger 24 × 16 × 10 in carry-on, and Frontier’s and Allegiant’s.
A 16 × 12 × 6 in tote
It goes under the seat as a free personal item on American, JetBlue, Frontier, Allegiant, Breeze, Air Canada, WestJet, Air France and easyJet. It is too wide for United’s 17 × 10 × 9 in, and a fraction too long for the 40 cm personal items of Lufthansa, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Aer Lingus and Ryanair (40 cm is 15.75 in). Delta and Southwest publish no personal item size, only that it must fit under the seat in front of you.
Common mistakes
- Measuring the box, not the bag. Luggage makers often quote the body without wheels and handle. Airlines measure everything, and the wheels alone can add an inch.
- Packing the expansion zipper open. A 9-inch bag expanded to 11 inches is an 11-inch bag at the sizer.
- Trusting “carry-on size” on the label. There is no single carry-on size. A label means one airline’s limit, usually the US 22 × 14 × 9 in, which is too big for several airlines abroad.
- Rounding centimeters to inches. 55 cm is 21.65 in, not 22. A bag that is exactly 22 in is over a 55 cm limit.
- Forgetting the fare. United Basic Economy and WestJet UltraBasic allow only a personal item on most routes, and the cheapest KLM and Air France tickets include only the small bag.

Not everywhere. It is a little too long for Air Canada (21.5 in) and for airlines with a 55 cm limit such as Lufthansa, KLM, Turkish Airlines and Aer Lingus, because 55 cm is 21.65 in. It fits WestJet’s 22 × 9 × 14 in carry-on.
What does 62 linear inches mean for a checked bag?
Add the length, width and height together, wheels and handles included: the total must be 62 in (158 cm) or less. A 27 × 21 × 14 in suitcase is exactly 62. Allegiant allows 80 linear inches; most others charge an oversize fee above 62.
Does the TSA set a carry-on size limit?
No. The TSA screens what is inside your bag, such as liquids over 3.4 oz. The size and weight limits are set by each airline, which is why they differ.
How much can a carry-on weigh?
American, Delta, United and JetBlue publish no carry-on weight limit. Frontier and Breeze allow 35 lb, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines 8 kg, Aer Lingus and Ryanair 10 kg, and KLM and Air France 12 kg for the cabin bag and the small bag together.
How much can a checked bag weigh?
50 lb (23 kg) in economy on most airlines in the table, with a fee for heavier bags. Frontier’s limit is 40 lb. Business and first class usually allow 70 lb (32 kg).
