Fleury is situated at 63 kms from the departmental capital.
Since the Battle of Verdun ended in1916, it was captured and recaptured by the Germans and French almost 16 times.
And since then it has been unoccupied.
This town was totally destroyed in the war and the entire landscape was rendered useless to such an extent that no inhabitants could survive in this place.
It was then decided not to rebuild it.
Because earlier the area thrived just on Agriculture and the land had been contaminated by poisonous gases and corpses, not much could have been done to the land used by farmers.
This site is renamed as “the village that dies for France” as a commemoration of the testimony to the war.
Managed by a municipality now, this place is a war relic in itself.
While the rest of France has developed greatly, this little village has retained its roots and is not a part of the modern world.
While the planning of the village while it was being rebuilt, has lent a modern feel to it but the lifestyles and the daily activities are still old and traditional.
Fleury is known for places in and around it and keeps the tourist busy throughout the time that they would spend their vacation.
From water bodies, to museums, to old buildings and wineries, Fleury in France has everything you could ask for.
Best time to visit Fleury ?
The best time to visit this place is between the months of March till November every year when the daily average temperature fluctuates between 15 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius.
The winters are extreme and should be avoided.
Also there is heavy snowfall at times and then the excursions and tours are cancelled due to bad weather…
Best things to do in Fleury
These are my favorite things to do and beautiful places to visit on your next holiday to Fleury .
Gouffre de l’Oeil Doux
This is also called the Gulf of Mild Eye.
Made of very high walls of limestone, the green colour dominates the colour of the water and the walls.
The walls are as high as 40 m in height and line the entire place.
While the water of the gulf is brackish, the salinity content is very high too.
The level of the water in this reservoir varies with the rainfall and movement of the tides of the sea.
Calculated at an average of 14m , the depth is measured to the boulder bottom.
There is however no record of a penetration gallery.
The car does take you close to the place but you will have to park it at a distance and a little brisk walk makes you reach upon the winding road that takes you to this site.
Swimming in this zone is not only dangerous but prohibited also.
While some people do break the rules and plunge in, the risks involved are far more than the thrill this could give you.
This location is also shot in the Jerome Foulon starrer ‘The storm Boy” which released in 1996.
While this may have been created due to the collapse of a ceiling from the Clape, the resurgence can be dated back to the tertiary period, which makes this site a very old and ancient site.
There are also a lot of legends and myths that surround the body of this saltwater lake.
While some claim that the bodies which drown are never found again, some think this is a lake for which no depth can been calculated.
In reality this cliff is made out of limestone blocks which overlook the vast green colored expanse of water.
The only thing that is unfavorable hereis the seeping in of sea water through a small loop hole which makes the waters brackish.
This is a magnificent view of the area landing in between the scrubland and the sea.
While the area is a space quite close to the sea and good for a long-long walk, but then the children should be kept at a distance from this place.
This place is a visit for the nature lovers who find solace in the tranquil and serene nature surrounding them.

Just the remnants are enough to explain the grandeur that may have been in this place.
