If you want walkability and being close to everything, stay somewhere right in or near downtown New Buffalo.
There are some really charming smaller inns and bed-and-breakfasts tucked around the area that have this cozy, lived-in feel I absolutely love.

The Harbor Country area has a good number of vacation rentals that are right near the water or just a short drive to the beach.

I had one of those afternoons on a trip like this once and it turned into one of the best naps of my life.

New Buffalo works for both, but the feel is pretty different.
Solo, it’s meditative.

You’ll avoid the worst of the weekend traffic and get an extra morning in New Buffalo that you’ll be glad you have.
One more thing — turn your notifications off.
Or at least down.
This trip hits different when you’re actually present for it.
The lake has a way of making everything else feel less urgent.
