What your rental car company charges for tolls in the state you pick it up, against its all-inclusive plan and your own toll pass.

Avis in Texas, 5 days with tolls on 3: Avis e-Toll costs $44.85 with your $24.00 of tollsAgainst your own toll pass $24.00; e-Toll Unlimited $54.95โ€“$129.95. These are Avis’s national terms.

  1. Your own toll pass: $24.00 โ€” just the tolls, at your pass’s rate (SunPass PRO, SunPass Mini, TxTag, EZ TAG, TollTag, K-TAG, PikePass, or ExpressToll work here) โ€” add the rental’s plate to your account and keep the rental’s own transponder box closed.
  2. Avis e-Toll: $44.85 โ€” $6.95 a day you drive a toll, at most $34.95 a rental, plus the tolls at the highest posted rate. Terms: Avis (read 2026-10-04)
  3. e-Toll Unlimited: $54.95โ€“$129.95 โ€” $10.99โ€“$25.99 a rental day, at most $54.95โ€“$181.93 a week, tolls included (the price depends on the rental office). Terms: Avis (read 2026-10-04)

Read 2026-10-04: each company’s own toll page (Avis, Budget’s e-Toll site, Enterprise, PlatePass for Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty, Sixt) and the toll agencies’ lists for their roads (the Golden Gate Bridge district for California, E-470 for Colorado). Fees change: check the counter before you drive.

Quick answer: Most rental companies charge a fee for each day you drive a toll, plus the tolls at the highest posted rate: $6.95 a day at Avis and Budget, $4.95 at Enterprise, National and Alamo, capped near $35 a rental. Their all-inclusive plans charge every rental day. Your own toll pass costs only the tolls.

How to use it

Pick the rental company and the state you pick the car up in, how many days you rent it, on how many of them you will drive a toll road, and roughly what the tolls come to on each of those days. The tool prices every way to pay, cheapest first: the company’s program, its all-inclusive plan where it prints a price, and your own pass if one you might have works in that state. Each line links the page its terms come from.

How the programs work

Every big company enrolls you the moment you drive through a cashless toll without your own pass. Avis: If you use the e-Toll service at any time during your rental, you agree to pay a convenience fee of $6.95 for each day on which you incur a toll up to a maximum amount of $34.95 per rental period (not to exceed 30 days). Enterprise: You will be charged $4.95 per day (also referred to as a TollPass Convenience Charge) for using the TollPass Service with a rental period maximum of $34.65, plus the amount of each toll that you incur. The tolls themselves are not the cheap transponder rate. Enterprise: Tolls incurred are billed at the higher of the applicable toll authority’s video toll rate, cash toll rate or highest undiscounted toll rate.

The all-inclusive plans (Avis and Budget’s e-Toll Unlimited, PlatePass All-Inclusive at Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty, Sixt’s Express Tolls Unlimited, Enterprise’s Chicago waiver) charge for every day of the rental, tolls or not, and must usually be chosen at the counter. Several companies do not print their price nationally: PlatePass says PlatePass All-Inclusive daily and weekly rates vary by state., and Sixt that Availability and pricing vary by state. Where a public toll agency lists every company’s terms for its roads, the tool uses them: the Golden Gate Bridge district for California and E-470 for Colorado. Florida has its own tool, the Florida Toll Planner.

National’s and Alamo’s own toll pages did not load for us; both toll agencies’ lists give them Enterprise’s TollPass terms, so elsewhere the tool uses Enterprise’s. In Chicago, Enterprise rents a transponder instead: customers will pay a daily fee of $11.99 per rental day at airport and select downtown Chicago locations, and $10.99 per rental day at non-airport locations, tolls included. Worked examples

Avis in Texas, 5 days, tolls on 3 ($8 a day). Avis e-Toll costs $44.85 with your $24.00 of tolls; e-Toll Unlimited would be $54.95–$129.95 depending on the office; your own TxTag, EZ TAG or TollTag costs the $24.00 alone.

Avis in Colorado, 10 days, tolls on 8. e-Toll Unlimited costs $95.92, tolls included, against $98.75 for e-Toll: the weekly cap makes the flat plan the cheaper one.

Enterprise in New York, 5 days, tolls on 3. Enterprise TollPass costs $38.85 with your $24.00 of tolls; your own E-ZPass costs the tolls alone.

Hertz in California, 5 days, tolls on 3. Hertz PlatePass costs $41.85 with your $24.00 of tolls; PlatePass All-Inclusive would be $140.00.

Common mistakes

  • Opening the rental’s transponder box while your own pass is on the windshield: both may charge you.
  • Buying an all-inclusive plan for a trip with one toll day. It charges for every rental day; the per-day program charges only the days you use it.
  • Forgetting to add the rental’s plate to your own toll account: without it, the company’s program bills the toll.
  • Comparing only the fee. The program also bills each toll at the highest posted rate, more than your own pass pays.

FAQ

What is PlatePass and what does it cost?

PlatePass is the toll program of Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty. Its own FAQ says its daily and weekly rates vary by state; in California the Golden Gate Bridge district lists Hertz at $5.95 a toll day with no maximum, or $28.00 a day all-inclusive.

What does Enterprise charge for tolls?

Enterprise’s TollPass is $4.95 a day you drive a toll, at most $34.65 a rental, plus the tolls; in Colorado E-470 lists $3.95, at most $19.75. In Chicago it rents a transponder for $10.99–$11.99 a day, tolls included.

What does Avis charge for tolls?

Avis e-Toll is $6.95 a day you drive a toll, at most $34.95 a rental, plus the tolls; e-Toll Unlimited is $10.99–$25.99 a day depending on the office, at most $54.95–$181.93 a week, tolls included.

How does the Enterprise toll pass work?

You are enrolled automatically the first time you drive a cashless toll without paying it yourself, and charged only on the days you use a toll road.

How do rental car tolls work?

Most rental cars carry a transponder or are registered by plate. Drive a cashless toll without your own pass and the company pays it, then bills you the toll at the highest posted rate plus its fee for that day.

Are rental car toll fees worth it?

For one or two toll days, the per-day program usually costs less than an all-inclusive plan; for many toll days, the flat plan can win. Your own toll pass, with the rental’s plate added, is cheapest wherever it works.

What do Budget, National and Alamo charge for tolls?

Budget e-Toll is $6.95 a day you drive a toll, at most $34.75 a rental month. National and Alamo use Enterprise’s TollPass: $4.95 a toll day, at most $34.65 a rental.
