Your trip and roughly what the tolls come to: see what each way of paying costs, cheapest first, before you pick up the car.
Hertz, Dollar or Thrifty · 7 days, 3 on toll roads
$34.95 with a SunPass PROBuy a SunPass PRO ($14.95), add the rental’s plate to your account and decline PlatePass: $69.98 less than PlatePass.
- Add the rental car’s license plate to your SunPass account, with the dates you will have it, on SunPass.com or at 1-888-TOLL-FLA. If the transponder is not in the car or not working, the rental company may charge you. Remove it when you return the car.
- Toll-By-Plate is not an option in a rental car: the invoice goes to the car’s owner, the rental company, which bills you with its own fee.
- “The higher rate” is an estimate: SunPass saves an average of 25% against Toll-By-Plate, so tolls without it are taken as a third more.

Quick answer: in a rental car, compare the company’s toll program with your own SunPass PRO ($14.95) and the rental’s plate added to your account: a week in a Hertz with $20.00 of tolls costs $34.95 that way against $104.93 for PlatePass. In your own car, a SunPass Mini ($4.99) beats Toll-By-Plate, which costs about a third more per toll plus $2.50 an invoice.
How to use it
Choose a rental car or your own, the rental company, how many days the trip lasts and on how many of them you will drive toll roads, and roughly what the tolls come to at the SunPass rate — Florida’s Turnpike prints each road’s tolls on its toll calculator. The tool prices every way to pay, cheapest first, with what each is made of.
What each rental company charges
From SunPass’s own summary of the rental companies’ toll programs. “Declined” is what happens if you say no at the counter and then drive through a cashless toll anyway.
| Company | Program | Opted in | Declined, tolls driven anyway |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hertz, Dollar or Thrifty | PlatePass | $14.99 a day, tolls included | $9.99 a day with tolls, plus the tolls at the highest rate |
| Avis or Budget | e-Toll Unlimited | $12.99 a day or $64.95 a week, tolls included | $6.95 a day with tolls (at most $34.75), plus the tolls at the highest rate |
| Payless | e-Toll Unlimited | $12.99 a day or $64.95 a week, tolls included | $7.95 a day with tolls (at most $37.95), plus the tolls at the highest rate |
| Enterprise, National or Alamo | TollPass | $4.95 a day with tolls (at most $30.00), plus the tolls — automatic | — |
| Fox Rent a car | PlatePass | $14.49 a day (at most $217.35), tolls included | $15.00 per toll (at most $90.00), plus the tolls at the highest rate |
SunPass adds: “These rates are subject to change. Please check the rental car agency website for the most up to date information.” Enterprise, National and Alamo are the odd ones out: you are in their TollPass automatically the moment you use a SunPass-only lane, so there is nothing to decline.
Your own SunPass in a rental car
The SunPass PRO ($14.95) moves from car to car and works where E-ZPass does; the SunPass Mini ($4.99) sticks to one windshield, so it belongs in your own car. To use your own transponder in a rental, add the rental’s license plate to your SunPass account with the dates you will have it, on SunPass.com or at 1-888-TOLL-FLA, keep the transponder in the car, and take it with you when you return it. If it is not in the car or not working, the rental company may bill you through its own program.
Toll-By-Plate: your own car only
Without a transponder, a camera reads your plate and Florida mails the registered owner an invoice every 30 days, plus a $2.50 administrative fee. SunPass “can save an average of 25% on tolls when compared to TOLL-BY-PLATE”, Florida’s Turnpike says. It is not an option in a rental car: the invoice would go to the rental company, which is why its program exists.
