Unbelievable 13 Things To Do In Hamburg

By

–> Updated:

The ‘entryway to the world’ may be a strong title, yet Germany’s second-biggest city and greatest port has never been bashful.

Hamburg has traded business with the world following the time when it joined the Hanseatic League exchanging alliance back in the Middle Ages.

Hamburg is presently the country’s head media center and its richest harbor Metropolis.

Because Hamburg is both a city and a state, both the government and the parliament officials meet at the Hamburg town hall which is referred to in German as “The Rathaus”.

Things To Do in Hamburg

Stroll along the Port of Hamburg and admire the attractions along the way.

The austere buildings that were perfectly preserved along the water channels are suggestive and the suspension bridges give a spectacular view of the harbor especially during sunset.

The city of Hamburg is certainly a must see and always worth a visit.

Best time to visit Hamburg , Germany?

Things To Do in Hamburg

The ideal time to go on tour of Hamburg City is during the peak season months that starts from the month of May until September. It is around these months when warm climate clears through the city. This likewise implies that room rates are high, flights are pressed and swells of travelers pour in.

For less swarms and possibly lower inn costs (room rates stay really unfaltering year-round), visit in the fall (October – December). The climate will be energetic with temperatures in the 50s and 60s, yet the profits may be justified regardless of the chill.

If you don’t like the freezing winter season, avoid planning your tour of Hamburg from January up to April.

Best things to do in Hamburg

Blessed with attractions that are coordinated by its natural, historic, and charming soul, these are my favorite top things to do in Hamburg City…

Miniatur Wunderland

The Miniatur Wunderland is quite a revelation, an amazing place, and incredibly large. If you want to stay to observe the micro marvels one by one you must spend all day inside the museum.

It is really well done, there are discounts for students, and it has an excellent self service restaurant-cafeteria.

The museum is ideal for everyone: young, old, and even for those who are not fond of miniature models.

There are several sections (Switzerland, Austria, on the other Germany, Scandinavia and USA – Italy under construction, ready for the end of 2015) representing different areas of the world in detail. It is amazing to see the alternating day / night and the realism with which everything is done.

Beautiful section on the airport, with a lot of landings, takeoffs, and monitor with the flight list.

Miniatur Wunderland

The admission fee is 12 Euro full prices, 9 Euro for students, and additional discount for children. Inside you can also find a restaurant that is more than fair.

Keep in mind that there may be 15-30 minutes of waiting time from the moment you purchase the ticket.

Be like a child again and explore this fantastic museum of Germany in miniature! Do not miss the mini replica of all the attractions of Hamburg and the gift shop that is full of interesting things. Even the museum restaurant seems to be on a train.

At the entrance lobby, they will ask for your nationality and there is a panel with all visitors from every nation.

The visit should last for about an hour but you can stay inside for as long as you want. Discount with the Hamburg card is not really exceptional (€ 1) but 12 Euros is a good price for the standard German.

The place is easily accessible and it is located near the warehouses of the ancient port side of the river opposite the city center.

My favorite stuff to do in Hamburg

Port of Hamburg

Offers a cruise ship ride that lasts for about an hour, during which you can visit only a small part of the great port. It is located on the River Elbe and the rented boat ride travels more than 100 kilometers from the sea.

It’s definitely a nice ride and one of the popular things to do in Hamburg City. The walk around the harbor is the best thing to do in Hamburg and really deserves the time and effort.

Port of Hamburg

You can also hire bicycles and visit far and wide along the harbor area. The port is immense and reigns order and cleanliness.

It’s always difficult to get information if you do not speak good English or learn a little German language. Not far from the port, in the river, there is the Hard Rock Cafe, and a few tourist shops.

Church of St. Michael

The Church of St. Michael is really a special place and inside it looks really like an arena with many side stands and a lavish main altar to demonstrate the importance of the figure of the man who runs the Mass.

If you want to climb the tower you need to pay an entrance fee, but you will have the chance to admire all of Hamburg City from up there and appreciate the magnitude and scope of the harbor.

If you attend a Holy Mass, the ambience almost feels like a theater because of the great acoustics, Majestic pipe organ, orchestra, and the choir of boys around.

Church of St. Michael

The church is well maintained and completely restored. The seats are numbered and arranged in some lodges.

The interior is very unique and definitely worth visiting. The Lutheran Protestant Church is designed in Baroque style; it is one of the most beautiful attractions of Hamburg and it is more fondly called as “Der Michael”.

The crypt is empty and not worth it so do not bother.

Fun things to do in Hamburg

Park Planten un Blomen

With great pleasure you can walk in the Park Planten un Blomen , even though it is winter or there is snow. The park has pavilions of glass with tropical plants, in a subtropical climate setting. There are all kinds of cacti, the cacao tree with fruits, bamboo, olive trees, citrus trees, just do not count all the plants. It provides easy transition from one climate to another.

It is a very large park and a walk along the paths can be infinite, the park has a Japanese garden with domikom- making you feel like you are actually in Japan.

In winter, the roses and some flowers do not bloom and the fountain is shut but a walk in the garden is still worth it.

Park Planten un Blomen

The Botanical Garden is located very close to the center and within walking distance from the other famous attractions in Hamburg.

It has a cozy alley, walking paths, and benches. You can take a pleasant stroll in the evening, and after that see a performance of the dancing light-fountain which is located in the center of the park. It is a great way to spend an evening, which also does not cost anything.

Near the park there are two metro stations, so back to the hotel is not difficult.

Popular Hamburg tourist attractions

Aussenalster

The Aussenalster is the larger of the two artificial lakes formed by the Alster River, which runs through the city and flows into the river Elbe.

It is the outer one and it looks so great that there is a navigation service and the opportunity to go sailing or rowing. Overall, it is very relaxing.

Enjoy the nice romantic ride on the shores of this beautiful and artificial lake with charming and relaxing scenery in the heart of the city. On the shore there are many places where you can enjoy a drink or a cappuccino depending on the time.

The lake is surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants. It is an essential tour in Hamburg. Access is very convenient because it is near the downtown area and the train station.

Warehouse District

The Warehouse District is best remembered by history as the warehouses for products loaded and unloaded in the port of Hamburg, just going through there does not convey much more than its architectural beauty.

It’s a great area to visit and you can rent a boat that pass through these historical canals.

The best part of walking along the symbolic Warehouse District (Speicherstadt) is to discover the landscapes between the channels and small bridges, each with a corresponding name and history. Part of the tour is passing by the well-maintained buildings in red bricks.

It is nice to just wander through and then have lunch at the Wasserschloss. If you want to know how Germany became an economic giant and one of the richest countries in Europe, visit this place.

What else to do in Hamburg ?

Hamburg Town Hall

The Hamburg Town Hall is a building that was built since the nineteenth century in the Renaissance style and is located on a beautiful piazza, near the shopping area. You can do a guided tour, also in English.

The tour covers a visit to the council room, various halls, the hall of the Senate, which corresponds to the office of the judicial board, and the Office of the Mayor.

It is remarkable that Hamburg constitutes a city-state; in fact it is one of the States of the Federal Republic of Germany and the board corresponds to its Parliament. Both the square and the palace are very beautiful.

Inside the building there is also a restaurant serving international cuisine. With only 4 € / person you can access the guided tour of about a dozen rooms in the Town Hall. The conservation status of all is perfect and the guide is helpful and very clear. Absolutely recommended and not to be missed.

Is Hamburg worth visiting?

The answer is Yes. Hamburg is worth visiting. This is because it is such a magical place
full of beauty and adventours.
Make sure you visit the following stunning zoo:

Hamburg Zoo

The Hamburg Zoo has large spaces where animals can feel in their habitat but in winter all the bars within the park are closed (the first available is within the tropical zone and is pretty much the end of the route).

The zoo in Hamburg is one of the most beautiful zoos in Germany. Inside there is an amazing variety of animals and what is most striking is the almost total absence of cages, so it seems to be more in touch with nature and the animals do not seem to suffer from the lack of their habitat.

The aquarium is also well built and the most visited part of the zoo especially for kids.

It is a modern and beautiful zoo where the animals have plenty of space. You can see a lot of themes, and in particular the Arctic zone that is completely new and very nice with bird cliff and a great area for penguins, walruses, and polar bears.

It also has an impressive alvarium and tropical greenhouse, which requires another extra payment to get in and see. You can come close to the animals, and feed some of them. Feeding fruits to the elephants are allowed which is really fun (and a little wet).

If you come during the winter holidays, some restaurants and ice cream parlors are closed – and the food selection is not that impressive in the restaurant. It is wise to make a good sandwich and bring your own drinking water instead of buying food on the site.

The tour of the entire zoo takes about three hours, but you could easily spend 5-6 hours if you have the time and inclination.

What else to see in Hamburg ?

Jungfernstieg

The Jungfernstieg is one of the commercial areas of the center of Hamburg. This place has numerous streets that are full of shops of all types, similar to those that you would find in any European city center.

The streets are reserved for pedestrians. To see without expecting great things. It has many shopping malls, the markets are fantastic, and you can drink, eat and enjoy the view inside the Alster of the same markets.

During the Christmas season, it is more beautiful because the shopping streets are bright and reflect the lights in the various channels that arise towards the interior of the district.

If you visit the city during these markets, be prepared to eat and drink wurst punch in every hour of the day.

This site has many activities, restaurants, and other forms of amusement. In short, it is an area that is rich and luxurious.

It is a bit crowded but very tidy and spacious. The lights of the shops and the scenery of the lake create beautiful and contrasting landscapes, between artificial and natural.

Very central and well served by the Metrorail (more lines on the same bus and subway that connects up to the Rathaus). Do not miss one of the best places in Hamburg.

Popular places to visit in Hamburg

Treppenviertel

Here at the Treppenviertel there are no roads, but steps! Beautiful views from every angle as you see the River Elbe that looks like a sea. On the banks there is also a beach.

Very nice feeling you get walking in and around these streets. It is best to visit on a sunny day, you will not be disappointed!

Treppenviertel

Great location with pleasant atmosphere – nice houses, lovely stairs and a breathtaking view. The very different types of houses and associated gardens / terraces provide a lovely experience while going around Hamburg City.

Take your time and stroll through the small streets and the lovely parks in Blankenese.

Things to do in Hamburg with kids

Der Fischmarkt

You need to wake up early in the morning, while it is still very cold to reach the Der Fischmarkt.

It is really worth all the time.

Here you can buy a variety of products, fruits, vegetables and souvenirs of all kinds, but especially the presence of stalls offering specialties and delicacies such as sandwiches with herring, shrimp, and cabbage and so on, a very special breakfast! It is very tranquil and for lovers of fresh hot coffee in the morning there is no shortage, along with donuts and pastries of all kinds.

Der Fischmarkt

Inside the building of Fischmarkt you can also eat warm traditional dishes and get comfortably seated at the tables while local bands play live. It is very popular so although you come here early, and if it’s still dark, you will not be alone.

The nearby square is home to many places that offer the famous fish sandwiches, as well as hot dogs and various beverages, including excellent beer.

Things to do around Hamburg

Alter Elbtunnel

You can reach the Alter Elbtunnel both with stairs or the elevator. It is a tunnel with a central part and two sidewalks. Everything must be done on foot so you can see the view from the other side of the river. It is close to the Hard Rock Café in Hamburg.

The tunnel under the river Elbe was built in 1911 and it is still in perfect condition. The underground journey can be done on foot, by bike or car.

Take a walk and see with your own eyes what man can do. When all the museums are closed in any weather, you can get acquainted with one of the oldest tunnels in Europe, which still operates. It is a monument of engineering from the early 20th century. It serves as an automobile and pedestrian tunnel.

You can go down the tunnel to the elevator or the stairs. It is interesting to all travelers, but you can walk. And admire the work of the engineers of the old era.

Alter Elbtunnel

Germany and the city of Hamburg can be defined as historical and very informative with every sights and manmade attractions that you will visit. Although it was completely destructed during the World War II, it is still extremely impressive on its layout and natural beauty.

In Altes, you can enjoy pleasant walks as you enjoy idyllic city views of the lake.

You can spend a pleasant time in the Port Hamburg area on the banks of the River Elbe in the same way as you can take a trip to the city’s historic and commercial buildings in the channel between the regions where the Old Town still stands.
