What is the Description of Biscayne Bay?

Biscayne Bay is a Bay of the Atlantic Ocean with aquamarine water, limestone coral keys and a barrier reef with a wide variety of underwater inhabitants.

Here you can go on an excursion with a ranger, go snorkeling, diving, fishing, camping in nature or just relax in a rocking chair, enjoying the beautiful panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Among the specially protected rare creatures on the territory of Biscayne Park live: American manatees, sharp-snouted crocodile, sea turtles and a rare peregrine falcon.

The barrier reef protects Biscayne Bay well from the strong currents of the Atlantic Ocean and high waves, like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

And since there are reefs in the water, it means that colorful underwater life flows in Biscayne Bay, which experienced divers can see with their own eyes, and all other visitors to the park can learn from the stories of rangers or watch an interesting film about it in the visitor center of the park.

Why is Biscayne Bay Important?

Biscayne Bay provides residents and visitors not only with exceptional beauty but with tremendous environmental benefits.

The health of Biscayne Bay is directly linked to the economic and environmental health of tropical paradise.

For the past few years, experts have been showing the alarm signals: the waters of Biscayne Bay are on the verge of an ecological disaster.

The Bay is located in the center of the city, and has some boats, ships that dump waste and oil into the water area.

In addition, there is a constant washout from the berths and retaining walls, which also affects pollution.

Often, some buildings which are located near the berths discharge wastewater into the bay…

The main attention is paid to the cleaning of Biscayne Bay, for saving marine life and as it is a landmark place for the city, which is visited daily by many guests and residents of Miami.

Often there is a lot of garbage, and it is easily collected.

But there are also more polluted, but less accessible parts of the bay.

A significant part of the garbage is bottles, bags, plastic packaging.

All this is thrown daily by people from ships and embankments.

And each person can prevent the pollution of the bay, it is enough just not to throw garbage into the water.

As well as cyanobacteria bloom – blue-green algae, the excessive distribution of which causes certain concerns among scientists.

This process worsens the state of the recreational environment of reservoirs, water quality.

But the most dangerous thing is that the aquatic ecosystem is disturbed, which, in particular, can lead to a significant decrease or even complete disappearance of the population of commercial fish.

Cyanotoxins released by algae cause significant harm to aquatic and terrestrial organisms.

Some locals take home the message of conservation by purchasing a “Protect Biscayne Bay” car license plate.

Proceeds from license plate sales go to theMiami Foundation to raise awareness and fund educational and conservation efforts in Biscayne Bay.

We MUST take care of the bay now, it will remain a gem that everyone can enjoy for many years to come.
