Shoreditch gained popularity among creative youth – designers, startups, gallery owners, actors and just hipsters – about 8 years ago, and today all local guides recommend visiting this creative quarter.
Shoreditch is a former industrial area.
At the beginning of the 2000s, the vacated factories were hastily converted into cheap apartments and studios, which young and creative Londoners moved into.
As usual, the creative class has attracted clubs, cafes, art studios and numerous exhibitions to the area.
Today, living in Shoreditch means being at the epicenter of the cultural life of England.
Have you been denied a Shoreditch Club entry because your attire does not comply with some rules or principles of the institution?
Let’s figure out how to dress in Shoreditch so this minor nuisance cannot spoil your pleasant pastime there…
What Should I Wear to Shoreditch?
Unisex Clothes.
There is an androgyny in the appearance of hipsters, and one of the favorite styles of hipsters is unisex.
At the same time, hipsters prefer things from democratic brands (for example, Zara or Topshop) combined with vintage.
Makeup for a hipster girl is optional or should look as natural as possible.
However, bright red lipstick and bright nail polish can be used.
Hipsters are no strangers to the fashion world, and many of them run their own fashion blogs too.
They could also use the word “hipster” in relation to the jazz musicians themselves.
The very word “hipster”, like “hippie”, comes from the English verb “to be hip”.
Today, hipsters are young people whose average age ranges from 14 to 25 years old, who are representatives of the middle class.
Mornings in Shoreditch
I wanted to feel the vibes of morning in Shoreditch and I visited several places for breakfast but I managed to shoot only in the Allpress Espresso place (the owners earnestly demanded to ask them for permission to shoot).
As it turns out, coffee shops are central to Shoreditch in the morning. Businessmen meet here, designers and startups conduct interviews, families with children have breakfast.
Coffee flows like a river. Naturally, coffee is special – Allpress is famous for its brewing technology.
The standard morning menu is ciabatta/sandwich, coffee. A lot of coffee.
Lunches and dinners are often also held in coffee shops or chain restaurants.
No scrambled eggs with bacon and beans, like in South London. It is about respect to veganism.
Shops with vegan food are found at every turn.
Who Are the Real Hipsters?
On its own, the word ‘hipster’ doesn’t apply to many people who live in Shoreditch. But no other definition has yet been invented, so yes: they are almost all hipsters here.
The first rule of a hipster is never say you’re a hipster 😁.
In fact, a lot of people in Shoreditch are very careful about what they wear, where they go, what brands their friends prefer.
Bearded men take care of themselves better than some ladies. But voluntarily admitting that you are a hipster is somehow …. not cool, or something.
They wear clothes of only popular brands or cool, expensive vintage.
In food – exceptionally healthy food, even though it is damn expensive.
No fast food. Here, wherever you spit – everything is copyrighted, according to a unique / original recipe.
As for parties, hipsters only go to certain clubs, some of them are closed.
There is all the music that is popular today – from pop to electro.
Can I Wear Trainers Out in Shoreditch?
Yes, if I want to be old fashioned…
Brand, vintage clothes, hats are popular among hipsters.
They most popular item is hats here , for example trilby (a hat with narrow, slightly lowered brim and a low trapezoid crown with one hollow in the center and two on the sides), wide-brimmed hats, bowlers, homburgs (a hat with a trapezoid crown with a deep longitudinal hollow, and narrow hard fields, bent up from the sides).
What Do You Wear to a Club in Shoreditch?
Dress Casual Clothes.
Usually it can be trousers – tight, tight-fitting figure, most often made of denim and T-shirts and sweaters with prints and inscriptions
Mandatory hipster shoes are sneakers, always in bright colors.
Hipster girls prefer colored tights, A-line skirts, short shorts, voluminous scarves.
Fashionable private clubs such as Shoreditch Club and Soho House do not have a dress code (although if you jump into the pool on the roof of the house in your underwear, you will be escorted immediately, as they think it’s just unhygienic).
In such clubs that have existed for a long time, one could hope that their visitors are aware of the requirements and principles of the institution, however, in order to avoid unpleasant situations, it is better to clarify everything.
The Annabel’s Club, for example, has a useful illustrated code of conduct regarding attendees’ appearance, which shows how the dress code has changed and simplified over the years, from women’s lace shorts in 1760 to collared jackets and shirts in our days.
A drawing of a man in a sporty tight T-shirt and jeans reads: “It’s still early.” Boots and cowboy boots are a strict taboo for both men and women.
What is the Dress Code in Shoreditch?
It is usually a Casual Dress Code: tight-fitting jeans and trousers in bright colors, loose shirts and blazers, intricate brooches and headpieces, striped clothing and an abundance of accessories, as well as incredible combinations of vintage items from a grandmother’s chest with modern fashion clothes.
Where Do Hipsters Hang Out?
Shoreditch has a huge number of clubs.
Don’t go to the places where there are
Long queue, cool poster, two big guys at the entrance. It is always crowded there , too noisy, drug addicts meet periodically, and a lot of tourists, which is doubly bad.
In my opinion, the only way to get to the right place is to ask a local where to go. Today I recommend the Strongroom bar.
In general, locals choose clubs according to the mood. Here is a shortlist now:
If you want to drink cocktails / chat with friends and play beer pong, then this is The book club. Guys “up to 30” hang out there.
The coolest, but at the same time it is a small club – XOYO.
The coolest in principle is Fabric.
The most legendary megaclub is Ministry of Sound (the rave culture originated here).
The best cuisine and atmosphere – The Hemingway.
The main joy for hipsters is closed clubs. It can be The King’s Head. Of course, they won’t let you in without a local who is invited of course.
