What is a major issue concerning Lake Okeechobee?

The major problem regarding Lake Okeechobee is the run-off water from agricultural and developmental projects in Central and South Florida that have heavily polluted the lake.

The entire lake, which covers about 450,000 square acres of land, has been polluted over the years by water coming from agricultural establishments and stormwater runoff.

The government devised the $23 billion Everglades restoration plan to remedy this ugly situation.

The plan was designed in 1947 to prevent flooding on the southern side of the lake.

The Caloosahatchee and St.

Lucie rivers were designated as the two safety valves of the system increase there is overflooding.

They will collect the excess water from the lake and empty it into the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.

This has reduced the volume of fresh water in Florida Bay which the bay naturally receives through the Everglades.

A large quantity of nutrient-polluted water is discharged into the Caloosahatchee River during the rainy season.

The nutrient-rich water contains harmful algal blooms of increasing scope and frequency.

The lake operation is taken care of by the federal Army Corps of Engineers.

The operational manuals of the Corps factor in public safety and other objectives as set out by the  South Florida Water Management District.

Minimum Flows & Levels

In conclusion, there is a certain amount of freshwater in the brackish water estuary that sustains the Vallisneria tape grass close to Fort Myers.

The tape grass will die naturally when there is not enough rainfall during the dry season to sustain it.

Due to the changes in seasons and water mismanagement operations by government agencies, Caloosahatchee always has an excess volume of freshwater during the rainy season and is starved of freshwater during the dry season.
