The American black bear, often called the black bear can be found in some forested settings.

I have always wanted to see these bears in their wild habitats

.

The closest opportunities I had with these bears

was at the Zoo, but I felt they were living in bondage.

The black bear can be found worldwide, but they have different sizes.

For instance, they

live in Canada’s

humid hardwood marshes, Alaska’s coniferous forests, including Mexico’s perennial shrub woods.

Are there bears in Florida?

Yes, there are bears in Florida.

Their preferred habitat is in hammocks, bay heads, swamps, Flatwoods, and in scrub oak ridges.

From a home range, they search for food and water.

Are There Bears in Florida?

Are There Bears in Florida?

They have sufficient protection.

There were

many bears

in the whole of Florida”s peninsula, other coastlines, and some bigger keys in the 70s, but by the mid-1970s certain Europeans relocated to these areas, and the number of bears reduced to 18% of what they were before.

If you want to see black bears, I suggest you come to Florida and watch them in the wild.

I am thinking of making a vacation around the bear habitat.

Are there many bears in Florida

Yes.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimated 4,050 black bears can be found in Florida.

The FWC counts the bear at an interval of five years.

At the last count, they observed that the number of bears had increased by 50 percent.

Currently, their home is sparse.

Although wild bears live in Florida, they stay in areas that have extensive forests due to the availability of their food.

The

black type of bear prefers to live

in thick undergrowth.

from humans.

The wild bears in Florida are comfortable in swamps, sand-pine, upland hardwood forests, and Flatwoods.

Where are bears in Florida located?

You can find bears in most

parts of Florida

.

About 80 percent of the diet of the Florida black bears consists of plants like seeds, berries, grass, fruits, and nuts.

About 15% contains insects, and 5% contains animal matter, like raccoons, armadillos, and white-tailed deer, armadillos, and raccoons.

It is because they are omnivorous mammals in nature.

Mast, leaves, and grass are the vegetative part of their nutrition.

Wild pigs, honey, and carrion are also part of their meals.

In these regards, bears are scavengers and not predators.

Black bears can eat humans,  even though they don’t practice it.

Anytime a black bear attacks a human being, it is because that human has tampered with its children.

What kind of bears reside in florida

The the only bear species in Florida is the black bear, and you cannot find  the brown bears, polar bears, or grizzlies.

Florida black bear can be found in eight secluded habitats in the state.

Today, bear population has been threatened by human activities.

For instance, encroaching developments that include roadways and residential communities have fragmented the terriroities we find these black bears.

Even though they are large mammals and can react aggressively when they are provoked, bears are not violent animals.

There are instances where they have scratched or bitten people who have tampered with their food or their children,

Meanwhile, no predatory attacks have been recorded yet.

The state of Florida even restricted individuals from littering bear baits outside their homes, anything like food or garbage that will attract the bears should be put in a bear-resistant container.

Bird and cattle feed, pet food beverages,  toiletries, and pet food beverages, are also things that attract the bears.

However, the black bear population has drastically reduced, which has made the government protect the remaining population.

In many of their habitats, access to food has been provided to ensure that they are not genetically isolated.

Adult males can wander for hours in search of food.

If they cannot find food around their habitats, they may never come up and end reducing their population.

In Southwest Florida, you can find these bears in large number when you come to Lee County.

I was told you can commonly find bears in the lower end of the county.

Many of my friends have spotted them around

Cape Coral

residential areas.

Last summer, one of them shared a story with me of his encounter with a bear when he was swimming.

The cub sniffed his belonging and ran when his phone buzz.

I don’t recommend people staying around these massive wild animals.

They could feel threatened and attack you.

Meanwhile, Collier County has Florida  bears in abundance.

On the other hand,

Naples

has bears that make tourism more exciting.

I have watched them on the television swimming in pools, relaxing on lanais, and hanging out on trampolienes.

Some other places you can find these bears occasionally are in De Soto, Manatee,

Sarasota

, and Charlotte counties.

On the opposite side of Florida, where you find the Keys, bears roam those areas steadily.

Florida Black Bear Conservation Status

The Florida black bear subspecies have not been assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

At the time, their number was just 300 bears so the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission declared their species as endangered.

After some time, they were removed from the endangered species list because their number increased speedily to about 4,000 adult bears settled in the state for about 100 years now.

Florida highway has become hotspots for bears.

For instance, the state has witnessed many deadly bear-vehicle collisions in some regions.

I don’t want to meet these bears on highway, especially when driving.

I drive carefully when I pass through some of the bear habitats in the state.

While I may not have spotted them on the highways, many people have seen them.

Final Thoughts

Many Floridians are not aware that they can attract black bears to attack or invade their trashcans when they leave pet food, unsecured trash, or barbecues open.

I recommend that you don’t dispose waste discriminatory if you live around some of the areas I mentioned.

You can purchase bear-proof trashcans if you don’t want bears crawling around your home, looking inside trashcans.

Finally,

bears are protective a

nd aggressive if you make feel threatened.

When you see cubs, resist the urge of taking selfies around them because their mother may be lurking around.
