Alexander W.

Livingston

Alexander W.

Livingston gave the town its fruity nickname.

He was the

man who made

up his mind to breed the wild tomato varieties into plants that will produce fruits that will be uniform in shape and color.

He selected and stored the seeds of all the tomato plants that bore fruits of ideal shapes and sizes.

He planted them in rows in a different garden the next planting season.

He was able to achieve uniform tomato fruits through cross-pollination with the help of wind, insects, and birds.

With this method, he developed the first commercial hybrid tomato he called the Paragon and the Acme.

Both tomatoes produced his subsequent crops which are the variety of tomatoes we have today.

When he floated the Livingston Seed Company, he gave jobs to many residents of the town.

He used to host picnics for his company workers on his property after they must have harvested and sorted the seed.

The National Registry recognized his home as a Historical Landmark because of his reputation and the Victorian frame he constructed in 1800.

Today, Alexander W.

Livingston’s house is available for rent, but for only adults.

It is a nice place for weddings, parties, and bridal or baby showers.
