What is Oktoberfest?

In 1810, Oktoberfest started in Munich, Germany, to celebrate the marriage of Ludwig I, Prince of Bavaria, and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

The people celebrated with horse races before adding food stalls and agricultural fairs.

The beer halls were included in the 20th century, making it a fun-filled festival where thousands of people drink beer and eat food.

In addition, events like lively parades, oompah bands, polka dancing, traditional German cuisine, and content are held.

The first Oktoberfest was held in Munich in mid-October but can now begin as early as September and end on the last Sunday in October.

The Oktoberfest attire makes the festival rich and more appealing.

Men wear traditional garb that includes lederhosen, while the women wear dirndl.

Best Places for Oktoberfest in the US

·         Frankenmuth, Michigan

Frankenmuth, Michigan, offers festival-goers one of the best Oktoberfests they can ever attend in the United States.

Why should you attend the festival in this town?

Frankenmuth was the first town that import beer from Munich-based Hofbrauhaus.

The beer company has sponsored Oktoberfest since its inception.

The locals called this festival “Michigan’s Little Bavaria.” In addition, Michigan is idyllic year-round and has plenty to do, including a quaint main street.

Before I landed in Tokyo, I thought I was the “Final Boss” of international travel. Spoiler alert: I WASN’T. 😅

Where is Oktoberfest held in Ohio?

Oktoberfest is held in Ohio at the Auglaize County Village of Minster.

In addition, it is celebrated in different parts of Ohio.

·         Zinzinnati, Ohio

The biggest Oktoberfest happens in Zinzinnati, Ohio and you don’t want to miss it.

The mayor of Munich backs this festival, making it popular worldwide.

I have been here and couldn’t believe the number of people that visited during this period.

More than 700,000 visitors partake in Oktoberfest in this town.

You can indulge in frivolity, beer, food, and German-style music.

·         La Crosse, Wisconsin

La Crosse, Wisconsin, welcomes visitors with colorful Oktoberfest annually.

The town hosts one of the biggest Oktoberfest in the United States.

You can spend the three days exploring German culture.

The weekend offers you a parade, plenty of beer, festive performances, and live music to keep you entertained.

·         Trapp Family Lodge, Vermont

If you have watched the “The Sound of Music,” you may know about the von Trapp family.

When the family fled war-torn Austria, many of us didn’t know what had happened to them.

After the family toured the United States as the Von Trapp Family Singers, they found a new home in Vermont.

With time, they started entertaining guests at their mountain lodge.

The Trapp Family Lodge has expanded to a brewery, many restaurants, and acres of beautiful landscape for exploring hiking and mountain biking.

In addition, the lodge hosts the popular Oktoberfest festival with a complete traditional German fair, including a stein competition.

·         Helen, Georgia

If you want to experience Oktoberfest in an extraordinary environment, you can visit Helen, Georgia festival.

The event happens at the base of the Appalachian Mountains and the Appalachian Trail.

Constructed in 1969, Helen enjoyed a massive facelift because of the festival.

John Kollock, an artist, designed the reimagined Main Street.

He got inspiration from the time he spent in German during WWII.

Coming to Helen offers you one of the biggest Oktoberfest in the United States.

Helen offers year-round attractions that include river tubing, hiking, ziplining, and an alpine mountain coaster.

·         Leavenworth, Washington

If you have not been to Helen, you may want to Leavenworth in Washington.

Leavenworth is a Bavarian-inspired village to drive the economy in the mountain town.

The plan worked initially, but the boom didn’t last because of environmental problems like the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression.

The locals didn’t keep their town in this shape but rebranded to a quaint alpine village.

They introduced the Oktoberfest festival alongside other festivals that have kept the town going for years.

Furthermore, Leavenworth encourages sustainable travel and launched “Give A Schnitzel” program for responsible visitation.

·         Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado houses at least 150 breweries, which makes it an ideal place to host Oktoberfest.

The festival spans two weekends in the month of September, and keeps the town busier.

You don’t have a dull moment in Denver during this festival because you have many things to do.

You can take part in keg bowling, drinking in beer halls, wiener dog races, and live entertainment options.

In addition, the outdoor adventures and wilderness in Colorado offer you adrenaline-pumping activities.
