Mileage Reimbursement Calculator
Your drives and the rate: what the IRS or a federal employer allows, each drive at the rate in force on its date.
IRS business rate
76¢ a mile since Jul 1, 2026The IRS business rate was 72.5¢ before that. Add your drives: each is paid at the rate on its own date.
Rates: the IRS’s standard mileage rates and GSA’s POV mileage reimbursement rates, read from their own pages.
The IRS standard mileage rate for business is 76¢ a mile for drives from July 1, 2026, and was 72.5¢ from January 1 to June 30. The federal (GSA) rate for your own car changed the same day, from $0.725 to $0.76. A 300-mile round trip on July 2 comes to $228.00; on June 30, $217.50.
How to use it
Pick the rate: an IRS rate (business, medical or military moving, charity), a GSA rate if you travel for a federal agency, or your employer’s own rate in cents. Then add your drives — the date, the distance, and whether it was a round trip; up to twelve, in miles or kilometers. The answer is the total and each drive’s amount. The drives are kept in the link, so a copied link reopens the whole log.
The rates, and how each one applies
The IRS publishes its standard mileage rates for each period in a news release (the IR number in the table). With an IRS rate, each drive is paid at the rate of the period it falls in: a log that runs across July 1, 2026 is split there. GSA publishes the rates federal agencies reimburse, and applies them per trip: “Use the table below to find the rate that was in effect when your travel began.” “Each rate stayed in effect until the next date listed.” So with a GSA rate the calculator pays the whole log at the rate of its first day.

Worked examples
One client visit, either side of the change. A 150-mile drive each way is 300 miles. On June 30, 2026 at 72.5¢ it comes to $217.50; on July 2 at 76¢, $228.00 — $10.50 more for the same drive.
A week that crosses July 1. 150 miles on June 29 and 150 on July 3. At the IRS business rate: 150 × 72.5¢ = $108.75 and 150 × 76¢ = $114.00, $222.75 in all. As one federal trip that began June 29, GSA pays all 300 miles at $0.725: $217.50.
Volunteering and a doctor’s visit. 200 miles driven for a charity at 14¢ come to $28.00; a 60-mile round trip to a specialist in August at the medical rate, 23.5¢, $14.10.
Common mistakes
- Using the rate on the day you claim. The rate is the drive’s (IRS) or the trip’s first day’s (GSA), not the day you fill in the form.
- Counting one way. Tick “round trip” for a drive there and back; the calculator doubles it.
- The business rate for a medical drive. Medical and military moving drives have their own, lower rate: 23.5¢ since July 1, 2026.
- The full GSA rate when a government car was on offer. Then it is $0.235 a mile, not $0.76.
- Next year’s rate. The IRS table here ends on December 31, 2026; a later drive has no published rate until the IRS announces one, and the calculator says so.
