Quick answer: a car repair costs its parts plus the shop’s labor, and the publishers that track repair bills do not agree. Brake pads for one axle: RepairPal’s national average is $330–$390, YourMechanic says $200–$500. Pick a repair to see every publisher’s price and date, and check your quote against them.
How to use it
Choose the repair. The big number is the span from the lowest price any publisher gives to the highest, parts and labor; below it is each publisher’s own figure, what it measures and when it was published, with a link to the page it came from. Type the quote your shop gave you to see whether it is under, inside or over the published prices. The miles you drive a year give AAA’s figure for what keeping a car running costs. Copy link keeps the repair and your quote.
Where the numbers come from
No one sets an official price for a repair, so the tool shows the publishers side by side and never an average of its own. RepairPal publishes a national average range for each repair, split into parts and labor; its pages refuse automated readers, so its figures were read from the Internet Archive’s copy of each page, dated as RepairPal dates them. YourMechanic, a mobile-mechanic service, prints its parts and labor quotes for a handful of example cars (and a per-axle range for brake pads). J.D. Power and Endurance give a range for a head gasket; Endurance’s transmission figure is the average of the replacements its protection plans paid for. CarMD‘s averages come from 2025 check-engine repairs. Every figure is re-checked every three months.

What a mechanic charges an hour
Labor is often most of the bill: RepairPal puts a head gasket’s labor at $1,633–$2,397 against $910–$941 of parts. Tekmetric, whose software thousands of shops bill through, puts the US average labor rate at $132 an hour, from $85 in the cheapest state to $197 in the dearest. AAA, from the 2025 PartsTech report, says almost half of all shops charge $120–$159 an hour, and YourMechanic gives $70–$130. Dealers usually charge more than independent shops.
Worked examples
A brake quote. A shop quotes $450 for front brake pads. That is inside the published prices ($200–$500) and inside YourMechanic’s range, but above RepairPal’s $330–$390 average: ask whether it includes rotors or premium pads.
A transmission. $7,200 to replace a transmission is $436 over every published price (RepairPal’s $6,238–$6,764 and Endurance’s $4,700 average). Ask for the parts and the labor hours in writing, whether it is new, rebuilt or used, and get a second quote.
A year of upkeep. At 12,000 miles a year, AAA’s 11.04¢ a mile for maintenance, repairs and tires comes to $1,325. That is AAA’s figure for a new car; an older one usually costs more.
Common mistakes
- Comparing a quote with one website’s average. The publishers measure different things, and the spread between them is real.
- Comparing quotes that are not for the same job: brake pads for one axle or two, pads alone or pads and rotors, new or rebuilt parts.
- Forgetting taxes, fees and diagnosis, which none of the published prices include.
- Reading a national price as the price in your town. Labor rates alone run from $85 to $197 an hour by state.

FAQ
How much does a car repair cost?
It depends on the repair: from $152–$212 for a serpentine belt to $4,700–$6,764 for a transmission, at published national prices for parts and labor. The table above gives 17 common repairs with each publisher’s figure; your car, your town and the shop move them.
How do I estimate a car repair cost?
Add the parts to the labor: the hours the job takes times the shop’s hourly rate. Published estimators such as RepairPal do this for a national average; the tool shows theirs beside other publishers’ prices, and a written quote from a shop is the only price for your own car.
How do I know if a car repair quote is fair?
Compare it with published prices for the same job, then ask for the parts and the labor hours in writing and get a second quote. Type your quote into the tool: it says whether it is under, inside or over every published price.
How much do mechanics charge per hour?
Tekmetric puts the US average labor rate at $132 an hour, from $85 to $197 by state. AAA says almost half of all shops charge $120–$159 an hour. Dealers usually charge more than independent shops.
How much does car maintenance cost per year?
AAA’s Your Driving Costs (2025) puts maintenance, repairs and tires at 11.04¢ a mile for a new car: $1,325 a year at 12,000 miles, $1,656 at 15,000. An older car usually costs more.
What is the most expensive car repair?
Of the 17 repairs here, a transmission replacement: $4,700–$6,764 at published prices, with RepairPal putting the parts alone at about $5,110. An AC compressor ($1,038–$3,412) and a head gasket ($1,000–$3,337) follow.
