If you love nature like me, you will enjoy your time at the Réunion Island. The island is a perfect destination for getaways and adventures.

Réunion Island is located in the Indian Ocean as part of the French overseas territory. Is Réunion Island a good place to live?

From beaches to mountains to volcanoes, this island has various thrilling landscapes. You’ll get to enjoy the culture of different places including French, Indian, Creole and Chinese cultures.

Although Réunion Island has a rather high rate of unemployment, you may encounter difficulties in getting a job but this does not mean that it is totally impossible to get a job here.

If you’ve thought about relocating to a tropical island, this may be your sign to do so. I will take you through this island and why I consider as one of my favorites.

Is Réunion Island a good place to live?

For people who are very zealous about nature, Réunion Island is the perfect destination. It is located in the Indian Ocean as part of the French overseas territory.

From beaches to mountains to volcanoes, this island has various thrilling landscapes.

Here, there are no dangerous animals, insects or snakes. However, sharks and shark attacks have become more common since 2011.

The most dangerous species are mosquitoes and they spread the Dengue virus. Regardless, there are special places in Réunion island where you can swim without fear.

Fun fact: Sharks are not actually interested in humans or ripping them apart like cartoons show. Most of the time, they are just curious when they see a person bathing or playing in the water and they get confused as to whether or not that is their food.

Things to Know About Living in Reunion Island

  1. Here, you can find a lot of hiking trails and waterfalls. If you love participating in outdoor activities, mountain trekking and just living a healthy lifestyle, Réunion Island is the best place to do so.

  1. The parks and towns in Réunion island are clean and properly maintained so you do not need to bother about medicine or belly bugs.
  2. Réunion island has a striking resemblance to Hawaii. If you’ve ever been to Hawaii, you’ll notice some common features that Réunion island also has. A few of them include:
  • They are both volcanic islands
  • Their climate is hot subtropical.

In Réunion Island, the average temperature throughout the year is about 25°C. During summer, the temperature rises and gets extremely hot in the months of December to February, usually in the daytime.

However, the evenings are chilly and much bearable. It may even require you to wear a jacket on windy days.

With its perfect all year round climate, many people refer to Réunion island as the European Hawaii.

  1. Since Réunion Island is in the European Union, EU citizens do not require a visa to travel here. As such, the processes involved in travelling are twice as easy.
  2. The currency used in Réunion Island is Euro. This is because Réunion Island is a part of the European Union. Due to this, there is no need for any exchange in currency and getting accustomed to using a foreign currency.

Surprisingly, Réunion island was the first place where the Euro was officially used. The first thing it was used to purchase was a kilogram of lychees!

This beach is characterised by its black sand and waves of the Indian Ocean. It is also lined with palm trees and is located on the southwestern part of the island away from the comforts of the lagoon.

L’etang Sale is a great spot for surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers and is popular among local fishermen.

However, this beach is not safe from sharks. There are warning signs provided by the locals so you’ll need to take extra caution while on the beach.

Ah the northern part of the beach, you can cool off and take a walk. This beach offers other amenities such as:

  • Restaurants with exquisite cuisine ranging from fresh seafood and dishes with a mix of Creole and French flavours
  • A commercial center with camping grounds and hotels

If you plan on going to this beach with your family, some cool places you can visit include:

  • Croc Park

The official language in Réunion island is French but Creole is still spoken by a large number of people in the Island.

Moving to a tropical island certainly feels like a difficult thing to do as it is quite different from the normal life that busier cities have to offer.

If you’re someone who is looking for a totally new thing to do or someone who just wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and cool off while exploring nature and still having fun at the same time, Réunion island is your best bet.

A lot does not know the Réunion island of people but this makes it even better as it does not gather a lot of crowds. The island is located in the Indian Ocean and is 340 miles to the east of Madagascar.

This island which is a part of France has some amazing locations you can go to enjoy the breathtaking environment.
