Which Island is bigger Mauritius or Réunion?

I will begin by discussing these two beautiful islands I have visited over the past decade.

Here is what you should know about the islands:

Mascarene island is made up of Mauritius, and Reunion island, also known as Sister Island.

It is very difficult to choose between Reunion Island and Mauritius.

However, you will come to a conclusion on which of them to choose for your vacation by the time you consider the things you want, like, and need.

I will give you an easy guideline to point out the basic information you need to have about these two tropical islands.

Which island is bigger Mauritius or Réunion?

You will see Reunion Island 175 kilometers southwest of Mauritius.

It is the younger of the two Islands.

The size of the Island is 20%  larger than that of Mauritius.

It has mountains that are more than 3,000 high.

There are two volcanic sites on the Island.

The first, Piton des Neiges is inactive, while the second, Piton de la Fournaise is active.

The Island is the best destination for adventurers.

You can engage in hiking, canyoning, paragliding, and much more.

The size of the Reunion is a bit larger than that of Mauritius, but it is less populated.

It has more mixture of ethnic and religious groups.

There are better service and more fancy hotels in Mauritius.

Reunion Island: Intense Island

The most surprising thing is that, as soon as you arrive at the airport, you will feel the 30 degrees atmospheric temperature and humid air that welcomes you to the tropical island.

The official language on the Island is French, so you will have no language problems if you are from  France or any other francophone country.

The Island uses the same currency as France, and the way of driving is the same as France too.

As soon as you get to Reunion Island, the first thing you will do is to identify the locations of interest through a helicopter ride.

It is an experience that lasts a lifetime.

Being a volcanic Island, Reunion Island is very mountainous at the center.

The only best way to explore the island’s interior is by helicopter ride.

The Island has three circuses, and each is peculiar on its own.

The circuses and the mountains are among the greatest features this Island has, and they will allow you to enjoy a lot of sports,  like paragliding, mountain walking, hiking, zip lines, and so on.

What country owns Reunion Island?

Reunion is a remote Indian Ocean island between Madagascar and Mauritius.

The Island is a French overseas territory recognized in French law as any other department in mainland France.

The population of the Island is big, and it also has a high ethnic diversity.

About one-fifth of the island’s population lives in its capital city of Saint-Denis.

You will love to see the volcano of Reunion Island.

It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

The good thing is that it does not pose any danger.

Only a few spits of lava flow each time it erupts.

At Piton de la fournaise, you will see a beautiful lunar desert landscape.

You will love to walk on the solidified lava flow.

The Island of Reunion is no doubt beautiful.

It is full of fun, mountains, and green vegetation.

The climate on the Island is warm and sunny every time of the year.

The Island has unique cultures, different from what you will see in other islands, and it is very nice to experience.

Things to Do in Reunion

  • You will see Circuses at Mafate, Salazie, Cilaos, Piton des Neiges, and Piton de la Fournaise.
  • You can go Hiking Trails.
  • You can go Horse riding, biking, and 4 x 4 golfing.
  • You can go diving at Saint-Leu, Saint-Gilles, and Boucan-Canot.
  • You can go deep sea fishing and surfing.

Agenda of the festivities

Between late January and early February comes the procession of Cavadee, which is known as Thaipoosam Cavade.

This is a festival celebrated by the Tamil community living on the island.

They dedicated this festival to Mourouga, one of their deities.

By early May, the Leu Tempo Festival will be held in Saint-Leu.

This festival features concerts, jugglers shows, carnival parades, and shows all over the town.

There is a festival that is celebrated for two days in June.

It is called the festival of guava and milk products and Plaine des Palmistes.

The festival features the tastings of local products, culinary competitions, exhibitions, and free concerts.

In early November comes the Festival of Lights.

Between December and January comes the Pandiale in St.

Paul.

The festival features walking on hot coals.

Mauritius: It’s a Pleasure

Mauritius is the little gem of the Indian Ocean.

The Island features an ideal climate and beautiful landscapes.

The Island has many beautiful white sand beaches on its coastline of about 320 km.

You will see the azure lagoon and its coral reef when diving.

You will meet dolphins as you take a tour of the Island.

You will discover the second part of the Island when you get inland.

You will see mountains, fresh waterfalls, and ancient nonactive volcanoes.

You will discover new beauties and intoxicating scents on the inland Island.

The excellently hospitable Island has blended people from Europe, Africa, and Asia perfectly.

My Verdict

Both Islands have their unique charms and personality.

None of them can be said to be more beautiful than the other.

The difference in both islands depends on your choice.

Some vacationers go for green tourism, while others go for white sandy beaches.

If I should choose, I would still choose Mauritius, although I still love the mountains and circuses of Reunion Island.

No matter which Island you choose, I wish you a happy vacation.

Remember, combining your vacation in both Islands the next time you are on vacation is possible.
