Short answer: pick Destin for fishing, boating and a harbor town with a calmer, family feel.
Pick Panama City Beach for a long strip of beach and a big state park.
Same white sand, same green water.
The difference is what you do when you’re not lying on it.
And if you’re thinking about March, know that Panama City Beach bans alcohol on the beach the whole month, as part of its spring break rules.

Destin: a fishing town that grew up
Destin calls itself “the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” and says it has the largest fishing fleet in Florida.
That’s the first reason to choose it: a deep-sea or bay fishing charter here is easy to book and a big part of the town.
The second reason?
The water on the bay side.
Destin sits on a peninsula between the Gulf and Choctawhatchee Bay, with East Pass at its western tip.
Near the pass is Crab Island, which started as two sand islands dredged out of East Pass and is now a sandbar that shows up at low tide.
It’s become a popular place to anchor.
Rent a pontoon, anchor in the shallows and spend the afternoon.
Honestly, it’s the most “Destin” thing you can do.
For a beach day without a boat, Henderson Beach State Park is the easy pick.
Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach are just west, too, if you want the Gulfarium on a rainy day.
Panama City Beach: more beach, more going on
Panama City Beach has about 9 miles of shoreline on the Gulf, and its slogan, “the World’s Most Beautiful Beaches,” leans on that sugar-white sand.
It became a well-known spring break spot during its real estate boom, and its reputation still carries a bit of that.
The best thing there, in my view, is St. Andrews State Park, three miles east of town.
It has two and a half miles of beach, two fishing piers, snorkeling and a full campground.
If you’re camping in summer, the park recommends reserving early.
Book it as soon as you know your dates.
The March rules
Panama City Beach now runs a strict spring break plan.
In 2026 that meant no alcohol on the beach for all of March and no alcohol sales between 2 am and 7 am.
Some sections of beach were also closed nightly from 10 pm to 4 am, from March 12 to April 30.
Breaking the rules can mean fines, arrest or jail time.
If you’re a family going in March, that’s mostly good news.
If you’re a group planning a beach party, go somewhere else.

Getting there
Destin’s airport, VPS, is inside Eglin Air Force Base, just under 16 miles from Destin, about 25 minutes by car.
Panama City Beach’s airport, ECP, opened in 2010 and sits north of the beach near West Bay.
Price both before you’ve booked anything.
A cheaper fare into the other airport, even with a layover, can be worth the drive, since the two towns are on the same stretch of coast.
The 30A beach towns, like Grayton Beach, sit between the two.
So which one?
- Families with young kids: Destin, for the calm bay-side water and Crab Island. Or PCB outside March, if you want more beach.
- People who fish: Destin, no contest.
- Campers and hikers: Panama City Beach, for St. Andrews.
- A spring break crowd: PCB doesn’t want you in March anymore, and its rules say so.
My pick?
Destin for a first trip, mainly for a day on the water at Crab Island.
Then try PCB in the off-season, when it’s quieter and you won’t wait in line for a table.
