Things to Know About the Cincinnati Zoological Garden

The Cincinnati Zoological Garden, known as the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, started operations on the 18th of September 1875.

In the beginning, the zoo had a small collection that consisted of only eight monkeys, two grizzly bears, three deer, six raccoons, two elk, a buffalo, a hyena, a tiger, an alligator, a circus elephant, and over four hundred birds, and a talking crow.

The growth rate of the zoo in the 1800s was very slow.

At last, the organization bought over sixty-six acres of land, adversely affecting their budget.

To save the zoo from bankruptcy, the residents of Cincinnati had to donate enough money to it in 1898.

The zoo operated as a profit-making organization with the Cincinnati Zoological Company as its business name for many years after.

In 1896 the management had to invite one hundred Sioux Native Americans to establish a new village in the zoo, to increase the numerical strength of its visitors.

However, these Native Americans lived there for just three months.

The Cincinnati Traction Company bought over the majority stock of the Zoological Company in 1901, which gave them control over the zoo and its holdings.

The company planned to demonstrate its products at the zoo to draw the attention of its customers.

Unfortunately, this plan did not work out, resulting in two women, Anna Sinton Taft and Mary Emery, buying over the zoo in 1915.

Presently, the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden are rated among the top five zoos in America.

About 780 different species of wildlife lived in it in the 1980s.

It is also called the world’s sexiest zoo because over half of the black rhinoceroses, white Bengal tigers, and lowland gorillas presently living in the zoo were born there.

You can come face-to-face with different kinds of animals from different places of the world like the world-famous Fiona the hippo at the zoo’s exhibits.

Recently the zoo was named the best zoo in America.

The botanical garden of the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden was rated as the second best in the Botanical Garden category, and the first position in the Tropical Botanic Garden category went to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden located in Coral Gables.

The Zoological Society of Cincinnati was formed in 1873 and officially started operations in 1875.

It is on record that the zoo is the second oldest in America.

To further demonstrate its position as the best zoo in America, the zoo recently added new animals to its stock and built new exhibits to entertain and educate visitors.

Rare Animals in Cincinnati Zoological Garden

Since the mother could not take good care of her, Rozi was transferred to Cincinnati zoo from Oregon.

She is now reserving attention every hour of the day and will soon be a participant in the zoo’s Cheetah Encounter.

For entertainment and socialization, she was paired with a puppy.

Recently, the zoo authority announced that they had added three new exhibits to the stock of their facilities.

The former Bear Hill will now become Bear Ridge.

They also said that the North American backyard wildlife will be honored with the Seat Otter Coast and a third habitat.

The target date for the commencement of operations by the exhibits is 2023.

Finally, Fiona the hippo, the most loved hippo in Cincinnati and the face of Cincinnati zoo, will soon become a big sister.

Her mother, Bibi is expectant of a baby later in the year.

Fiona would not have survived without human care because she was born six weeks premature, but the zoo authorities are optimistic that her mother will give birth to her sibling at full maturity.
