Why should I visit George Town?

By

–> Updated:

George Town City is the capital of the Cayman Islands and an ideal vacation spot, with a variety of water sports activities and many places for total relaxation.

Game fishing events are very popular here and many of the champion sports fishermen have trained in these waters.

In fact, fishing here is so good that an annual month-long celebration is held in this city every June, with fishing competitions that attract international participation.

You can schedule your holidays around this month and also enjoy fair weather, sailing, wakeboarding, paddle boarding, horseback riding, non-competitive fishing, golfing, watching a game of football, exploring museums, partying in the street — or just simply admiring the beautiful sunsets in Georgetown.

Best time to visit George Town ?

The British Overseas Territory state enjoys a tropical marine atmosphere with just minor temperature changes throughout the year.

Its summer (May – October) is warm and humid with occasional rain showers.

The winter season (November -April) is generally is cool with no downpours.

The breeze from the Caribbean Sea guarantees that temperatures stay near 80° Fahrenheit all year-round.

The ideal months to visit the city are during the peak of summer (May – July) when most festivities are celebrated and it is convenient to go around without worrying about thunderstorms and heavy rains.

Threats of hurricanes and floods due to heavy downpour are highest during the month of September, when exploring the city is less advisable.

Best things to do in George Town, Cayman Islands

These are my favorite things to do and beautiful places to visit on your next holiday to George Town .

Seven Mile Beach

The Seven Mile Beach is amazing and one of the best beaches you can find on the Cayman Islands.

Every point is characterized by crystal clear water and calm.

The sand and white corals are very beautiful, it looks like talc and even if you walk barefoot, it feels fine up to the edge of the ocean.

Being able to walk for miles on the beach and take a swim with no one nearby in a huge expanse of water is one of the best features of this beach.

With plenty of room and not too many resort places around, you can enjoy the Caribbean beach and also the tranquility and isolation in many ways.

Seven Mile Beach

A typical day starts quite early in the morning — everywhere you will see tourists, locals, and even very young people who are out waling and running (some accompanied by their dogs), or are already wet from a quick dip.

Every part of the beach is as stunning as the next, and one does not find much intrusive commercial activity.

It is, in essence, a beach that is not only beautiful but also enjoyable.

The Seven Mile Beach is easily accessible from the center of Georgetown, via a minibus / taxi collective at the modest price of $5 per person each way (duration 10-15 minutes).

My favorite stuff to do in George Town

Cayman Islands National Museum

The Cayman Islands National Museum is right in the city center and a good option for learning about the cultures and customs of the Cayman Islands.

The museum is very extensive and has lots to offer in terms of educational information about Georgetown and its interesting history.

The entire building has recently been rehabilitated and provides enough lighting to highlight every item on display.

It has a wealth of information that you cannot find anywhere else, although the museum is quite small.

It is perfectly designed for people who love history, arts, and culture.

Cayman Islands National Museum

A visit is highly recommended — after you spend some time in the water, you need to spend a quiet afternoon learning about the city’s history.

It is also a way of giving back because almost 100% of the proceeds generated from ticket sales are utilized by the management for the upkeep and maintenance of the historic and cultural museum.

Fun things to do in George Town

Porto di Georgetown (Port of Georgetown)

The heart of the small town. It has boats ready to take you fishing, lots of shops with their gadgets and local products, and some mini-malls.

In some corners you can find hawkers and pet shops to admire iguana or colorful parrots. There is the ubiquitous Hard Rock Cafe.

You can go around the beaches, which are all in a line one after the other on the left side; you can watch fishermen who often have very large fish on their lines. It’s quite interesting to watch the “pull &

spring” to reel them in.

The Port is very picturesque and a must see.

It gets busier when there are cruise ships that dock in its crystal-clear waters.

Porto di George Town

It’s a port like many others, full of people trying to sell you all kinds of local products, taxis available to take you anywhere, and souvenir sellers with shirts and straw hats imported from China.

If you disembark from a cruise ship, it is necessary to pass through this port full of bars and shops of all kinds.

There are shops selling local handicrafts and also shops that sell jewelry, gemstones, watches, and designer brands. In addition, many vendors are there to offer package tour trips to various beaches.

Popular George Town tourist attractions

Fort George

The symbolic Fort George is situated along the bus route for Harbor Drive and its adjacent Fort Street.

It was established in 1790 and constructed from coral and limestone.

Today, very little is left of the old walls and all you can see are ruins that are all properly marked with signs posted to explain its significant role as the fort that once served to protect the islands from colonizers.

Fort George

There are lots of shops, restaurants and modern fast-food places. The fort has no entrance fee and you can come and visit it anytime of the day.

At night it looks more impressive once it’s illuminated.

It is within the city and worth spending a little bit of your time to stroll, observe, and learn more about this city that is still under British governance.

What else to do in George Town ?

Governor’s Beach

What differentiates the Governor’s Beach from the rest of other noteworthy attractions in the Cayman Islands is that there are not a lot of activities, hotels, or beach facilities offered here.

There are also not many tourists that occupy the beach any time of the day.

So it’s kind of cool to take some pictures without getting a lot of people appearing in the background.

Otherwise it is all the same as the rest of the beach.

The location is beautiful and has very clean water.

For a bit of fun, you can grab your snorkel gear and go swimming to see the corals and several colored fishes, and what’s more you need not go deep-sea diving to admire them because they are almost visible to the naked eye even if you stand a few feet away from the ocean.

It is the beach of choice for the friendly people of Cayman on the weekends, when you will notice a heavy turnout of locals.

There is little shade but you will find some grills near the sea to enjoy a picnic while the breeze from the sea provides nice fresh air.

Is George Town worth visiting?

The answer is Yes.

George Town is worth visiting.

This is because it is such a magical place
full of beauty and adventures such as:

Ebanks Watersports

If you dare to be more adventurous while staying in the Cayman Islands, then the Ebanks Watersports is the ideal choice to pump up the adrenaline.

You can hire the services of Ebanks to enjoy the waters of the Seven Mile Beach and have a great excursion on board their jet-skis.

It is really fascinating!

For half an hour you can enjoy fast drives along the ocean and meet the stingrays — and you can have the rare opportunity of interacting with these cute creatures for more than 30 minutes.

Then head back again to the sea to access a snorkel area in the vicinity before returning to the coast to complete your tour.

It is highly recommended!

The staff is very attentive and provides all the gear properly You will be instructed on where you must go to maximize the best features of the activities.

If you like speed, this is the nicest way to get to the meeting with the stingrays and the snorkeling — and then complete the ride for a memorable adventure in Georgetown.

What else to see in George Town ?

Cayman Cruise Rides

If you feel the need to see the rest of the islands of the Cayman group, or enjoy a romantic cruise ride, you can avail yourself of the Cayman Private Charters service and be delighted with the whole adventure.

The staff is very helpful and well trained to entertain and accommodate any events you want to celebrate while on board.

They have catamarans where you can party and have fun with your friends if you want to celebrate in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

It is a five star cruise service with an amazing crew and magnificent scenery.

They offer affordable trips to the Stingray City.

They also cater the needs for fishing charters along with providing the gear.

Popular places to visit in George Town

Pampered Ponies Limited

The Pampered Ponies Limited is a great and fantastic experience that must not be missed when in Georgetown.

You can spend an amazing day here and have an unforgettable experience riding a great horse.

Along with a trained guide, you will choose your own ride to the ocean.

Once you have selected your horse, a few reminders are given regarding how to hold its reins and control its stance — and you will bond with the horse for a few minutes before heading out to the forest and into the ocean!

The experience is gorgeous and truly sensational.

The horses are well cared for obviously and the guides are very hospitable and very helpful when asked questions about how to keep up with the horse and its behavior while in the water.

The owner is a jolly person who welcomes every visitor warmly.

If you are staying in a local hotel, they have private vehicles to pick you up and bring you back there too after the horseback riding tour in Georgetown.

Things to do in George Town with kids

Wakeboard Cayman

If riding on a catamaran, horse or paddle board is not your thing, you can always try the wakeboarding experience offered at the Wakeboard Cayman.

If this is your first time to try an extreme sport, worry not because the company is equipped with well-trained staff who will guide you on how to make successful flips, jumps, and turns on the water.

With regard to safety gear, you need not be concerned because part of the fee covers free use of all safety gadgets and helmet.

They also provide free pick-up service at your hotel to avoid any inconvenience on your part.

They are very professional and know how to really pamper their clients with good customer care.

Cayman Stand Up Paddle

Have a great ride while paddling on top of the transparent waters of the Seven Mile Beach by a simple SUP.

.

Bring along the kids for this thrilling and fun ride.

However, service must be booked in advance.

They will promptly deliver your assigned boards and begin the adventure as you stand and maintain your balance on top of the board and paddle your way along the pristine waters in the cool breeze of the ocean.

Cayman Stand Up Paddle Co

Do not hesitate to try this one-of-a-kind adventure in Georgetown — you will not regret it.

Kids equally enjoy it along with learning how to be patient and to keep up their balance and posture while on the water.

It is fun watching a whole family get on top of the colored wide boards and make their way into the waters very easily.

Indeed, this is one great adventure that the whole family can enjoy and also one of the best things to do when in Georgetown.

Must see places in George Town

Pure Art Gallery and Gifts

It is always fun to shop and discover unique trinkets inside the Pure Art Gallery and Gifts.

From this simple-looking, quaint shop you can buy artworks and all kinds of things related to Georgetown.

There are gifts for children, fabrics, paintings and a wide variety of collections that the owner proudly shares for guests to appreciate.

If you are lucky, the owner (Becky) will be in the store;

she gladly shares the history of the small shop/gallery.

Pure Art Gallery and Gifts

An acclaimed artist herself she also shares why and how she has accumulated so many things.

She also creates handmade soaps and lotions, and hand-woven bags laced with Cayman gemstones.

The shop also offers handicraft works done by the locals of Georgetown.

All the items are reasonably priced and can be negotiated for a discount if they are purchased in bulk orders.

It is one of the most pleasant shops — fun and interesting to see while in the city.

Free things to do in George Town

Cayman Maritime Treasure Museum

If you are into treasure map, pirates, and golden chest stories, you can find them all here in the Cayman Maritime Treasure Museum.

A bit far from the city center and without enough signposts or markers, this museum however provides a view of the interesting wealth contained in the waters around Georgetown.

Cayman Maritime Treasure Museum

It is cool and has lots of amusing artifacts to show about how the maritime industry developed through the years.

It is informative as well because it has images and displayed items about how Georgetown used to look and how it became a developed city.

It’s quite hard to describe everything there is to see inside the building where it is permanently located.

It must be seen and experienced while in Georgetown.

National Gallery of the Cayman Islands

The variety of exhibits and artworks to admire inside the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is well presented and divided into grouped categories for better appreciation.

It is within the city center and near the paradise island of the 7 Mile Beach.

Outside it looks impressive as it stands in a stunning landscape of the city.

It does not take too much time to explore, and every artifact is well marked and with English translation on the provided travel guide of Georgetown.

There are lots of local art works presented.

For the kids, this gallery provides workshop places where they are taught how to make different types of crafts that they can take home after the workshop.

This place must not be bypassed when touring the city of Georgetown.

National Gallery of the Cayman Islands

Georgetown is a typical Caribbean port city that essentially offers numerous tourist shops (whose opening / closing times are dependent on the presence of cruise ships that dock in its port of call).

The port city is clean and pleasant to walk around and lined with amazing beaches that are hard to resist.

It is a real paradise, among the most beautiful and most structured parts of the Caribbean islands.

The pristine beach and the surrounding attractions are all conducive to relaxation, filled with luxury and budget hotels, and many shops — all facing an ocean with transparent water that looks more like an aquarium of colorful fishes that are easily seen.

The local tourism is excellent and every attraction offers several tours and options to suit every traveler’s taste.

Georgetown has everything you need for a perfect vacation;

include it on your bucket list of places to visit in the Caribbean.
