In the EU’s words

    The official ETIAS website

Rules: the official ETIAS website, checked 2026-09-29. © European Union. Reuse authorised provided the source is acknowledged (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU).

ETIAS has not started. When we checked on September 29, 2026, the EU said it “is currently not in operation and no applications for travel authorisations are collected at this point.” Once it starts, Americans, Canadians, Britons and 56 other nationalities need it for 30 European countries: €20, free under 18 or over 70.

    How to use it

Pick the passport you will travel on and the kind of trip. The checker answers in the EU’s own sentences, each linked to its page on the official ETIAS website: ETIAS, a visa, or nothing. Add your travel date to see whether ETIAS can apply to that trip at all, the travellers by age for the fee, anything that exempts you, and your passport’s expiry date (it stays on this page, never in its address) to check the three-month rule. Copy the link to share the answer with the people you travel with.

The rules, in the EU’s words

What it is: “ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of these 30 European countries.” “It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.” “With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can stay in the European countries requiring ETIAS for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.” “However, it does not guarantee entry.”

The fee: “When applying using this official ETIAS website, you will be charged a fee of EUR 20.” “Applicants who are under 18 or over 70 years of age are exempt from this payment.” “Applicants with family-member status do not have to pay the EUR 20 application fee.” “The application fee is non-refundable.”

The wait: “Most applications will be processed within minutes, or at the latest within 96 hours.” “However, some applicants may be asked to provide additional information or documentation or to participate in an interview with national authorities, which may take up to additional 30 days.”

When it starts — and why a trip before spring 2027 is safe

The EU’s news page on the timeline agreed in March 2025 says “ETIAS is expected to follow in the last quarter of 2026.” It has not named the day: “The European Union will inform about the specific date for the start of ETIAS several months prior to its launch.” What it has fixed is the phase-in: “The launch of ETIAS will be followed by a transitional period of at least six months.” During it, “travellers should already apply for their ETIAS travel authorisation, but those without one will not be refused entry as long as they fulfil all remaining entry conditions.” Then “The grace period will last at least six months”, when only a first trip since the transitional period ends gets in without one.

So a trip before March 29, 2027 cannot be refused for lack of ETIAS: ETIAS had not started on the day we checked, and six months of transition follow its start. The checker moves that date each time the rules are re-read, and shows the start date the day the EU publishes it.

    Worked examples

A family of four from Chicago. Two parents and two children aged 10 and 13: four applications, one each, but only the adults pay — €40.

Grandparents aged 72 and 74. Both are over 70, so both applications are free.

Rome on December 20, 2026. No ETIAS: it cannot be required on a trip before March 29, 2027.

A passport that runs out in two years. Granted on June 1, 2027 with a passport that expires on June 1, 2029, ETIAS lasts until June 1, 2029, not three years. “If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.”

    Common mistakes

    • Paying a lookalike site today. ETIAS “is currently not in operation”, so a site taking money for an application now is selling nothing you need. When it starts, apply on the EU’s own website or app.
    • Confusing it with the EES. The Entry/Exit System, which takes your fingerprints and photo at the border, is already running; ETIAS is the separate online authorisation still to come.
    • Booking first. “We strongly advise you to obtain the ETIAS travel authorisation before you buy your tickets and book your hotels.”
    • A dual citizen applying. “If you are a citizen of any of the European countries requiring ETIAS or Ireland, you are exempt from ETIAS regardless of any other nationality you may hold.” Travel on that passport.
    • A passport close to expiry. “Make sure your passport is valid for three months after your intended departure from the European countries requiring ETIAS – you will be refused entry at the border if it is not”.

    FAQ

    When does ETIAS start?

No date yet. The EU’s news page says “ETIAS is expected to follow in the last quarter of 2026”, and “The specific date for the launch of ETIAS will be announced later by the European Commission and published on this website.” Six months of transition follow the start, when travellers without one “will not be refused entry”.

    Do Americans need ETIAS?

Yes, once it starts, for visits of up to 90 days in any 180 to the 30 countries. Not today: ETIAS “is currently not in operation”. Dual U.S. and EU citizens travel on their European passport instead.

    How much does ETIAS cost?

€20 a person. “Applicants who are under 18 or over 70 years of age are exempt from this payment”, and so are family members of EU citizens. “The application fee is non-refundable.”

    How long is ETIAS valid?

“It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.” Add your passport’s expiry date above to see which.

    Which countries need ETIAS?

Thirty: the 27 EU countries except Ireland, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Cyprus counts its 90 days separately from the other 29.

    Is ETIAS a visa?

No. It is an online authorisation for people who do not need a visa, linked to one passport. People who need a Schengen visa still need the visa, and “Travellers with a valid visa do not need an ETIAS travel authorisation.”

Do I need ETIAS to change planes in Europe?

Not if you stay airside: “No, you do not need an ETIAS travel authorisation if you only remain in the international transit area.”
