Located as a small fishing village, this small settlement is a hub of Kite surfing and Wind surfing. Jeri, as its better known, is a kind of idyllic place where many travelers may extend their short trips.

Jeri is a place that has been removed from a modern world of screeching tyres and maniac noise. The streets here are paved with sand and the beaches stretch as far as the eyes can see.

Since, 1987, the area around Jeri was declared as an Environmental Protection area and there were no phones, no roads, and no TV’s till recent times.

This area has also been declared a beautiful national park in 2002 and so brought many building restrictions and tourism controls which have ultimately helped in preserving the area.

Electricity arrived in the village and hot showers and Air conditioners are no more items of luxury. Street lighting is however forbidden by law and the environment stays dull most of the time.

The name Jericoacoara has many stories behind it and the most probable is that combinations of the words from the indigenous language which roughly transliterate to the “holes of the turtles”.

Some others suggest that the name is basically drawn out of an inspiration from “Serotte” hill which stands next the village.

When seen from a distance through the sea, this hill looks like an alligator which is called the “jacarequara”.
