The next total eclipse anywhere: August 2, 2027, Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia. The nearest town where it is total: Jerez de la Frontera, Andalusia, ES, about 3,580 miles east-northeast (1 min 34 s of totality).
“Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sunโs bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.” (NASA)
Eclipse Predictions by Fred Espenak, NASA’s GSFC. Places: GeoNames.
The next solar eclipse is annular, on February 6, 2027 (Chile, Argentina, Atlantic); the next total one is August 2, 2027 (Spain, North Africa, Egypt, Saudi Arabia). In the U.S. the next totals are Mar 30, 2033 (Alaska); Aug 23, 2044 (Montana, N. Dakota); Aug 12, 2045 (s US). Type your town for yours.
How to use it
Type your town and pick it from the list, type coordinates (“40.71, -74.01”), or use your location, which stays on your device. The answer is the next eclipse you can actually see there, with the Sun up; below it, every solar eclipse to 2035 as seen from your town, the next total and annular ones before 2046, and how far the next total eclipse is.
Where the numbers come from
Every date, type and region is NASA’s (the decade tables of Fred Espenak’s eclipse predictions, NASA GSFC), and every answer for your town is computed from NASA’s Besselian elements for that eclipse — the same method, and the same code, as the 2027 Total Solar Eclipse Planner. Checked against NASA: at each central eclipse’s point of greatest eclipse, the planner gives NASA’s type and NASA’s central duration within 2 seconds. An eclipse counts as seen only with the Sun up; a total or annular one whose middle happens with the Sun down is seen, at most, as the partial phase at sunrise or sunset.
Total: the Moon covers the whole Sun, along a narrow path. Annular: the Moon is too far from Earth to cover it, and a ring of Sun stays around it. Hybrid: total along part of its path, annular along the rest. Partial: nowhere is the Sun fully covered. Outside a total or annular path, every one of them is a partial eclipse.

“Longest” is the longest totality or ring, at greatest eclipse (NASA). The planner goes on to 2045 for the next total and annular eclipse from your town.
Worked examples (counted from October 1, 2026)
New York City. The next eclipse there: Jan 26, 2028, partial, 3% of the Sun covered. It sees 3 of 20 eclipses to 2035, and no total one before 2046.
Dallas. Jan 26, 2028, partial, 11% of the Sun covered; the next total there: none before 2046.
Salt Lake City. The next total eclipse there: Aug 12, 2045, 1 min 33 s of totality.
Sydney. Jul 22, 2028, 3 min 48 s of totality — a total eclipse at home.
Common mistakes
- Taking a region list as a promise. “Seen from” is where any part of the eclipse is visible; from most of those places it is a small partial. Type your town.
- Forgetting the Sun’s height. An eclipse at sunrise or sunset needs a clear, low horizon in the right direction.
- Treating annular like total. The ring is never safe to look at without eclipse glasses.
- Trusting 99%. A partial eclipse at 99% is still daylight and still blinding; only totality is safe to see with the naked eye.
Eye safety
From NASA: “Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.” “Eclipse glasses are NOT regular sunglasses; regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the Sun.” “Safe solar viewers are thousands of times darker and ought to comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard.” “Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.”
Plan the trip
For August 2, 2027, use the 2027 Total Solar Eclipse Planner (times, the path, the towns with totality). Then check how long the flight is, whether you need a visa and the golden hour.
FAQ
When is the next solar eclipse?
February 6, 2027: annular, central over Chile, Argentina, Atlantic, partial over S. America, Antarctica, w & s Africa. Type your town above for the next one you can see.
When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S.?
March 30, 2033 (e Russia, Alaska); August 23, 2044 (Greenland, n Canada, Montana, N. Dakota); August 12, 2045 (s US, Haiti, Dominican Rep., Venezuela, Guyana, Fr. Guyana, Suriname, Brazil). The lower 48 states wait until 2044 and 2045.
When is the solar eclipse in 2028?
Two: January 26, 2028, annular (Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Suriname, Spain, Portugal), and July 22, 2028, total (Australia, N. Z.).
What is the schedule of future solar eclipses?
20 from 2027 to 2035, listed in the table above with their type and where they are seen; about two a year, somewhere on Earth.
Where can I see an eclipse map?
NASA draws one for every eclipse (Fred Espenak’s predictions); this page answers the question the map is for: what you will see from your own town, and how far the nearest totality is.
