Quick answer: a non-stop takes about 49 minutes plus 1 hour for every 518 miles. That is what US airlines’ own schedules average, gate to gate. Flying east is quicker because of the jet stream. New York to London is about 7 h 11 min, London to New York about 7 h 48 min, and Los Angeles to Tokyo about 11 h 51 min. How to use it
Type a city, an airport name or a three-letter code in each box and pick the airport. You get the great-circle distance (the shortest path over the globe, which is roughly what planes fly), an estimate of the scheduled flying time, and the route on a map. Add the day and local time you leave, and it shows the local time you land, with the time difference and the date change when you cross the date line.
Where the flying time comes from
Every flight a US airline operated in June 2026 is in the US Department of Transportation’s public on-time data, with its scheduled gate-to-gate time and its distance. We took each route’s typical (median) scheduled time, 5,797 routes, and fitted one line through them: about 49 minutes for taxiing, climbing and landing, plus 518 mph in the air, a little faster flying east and slower flying west. Half of the real routes sit within 7 minutes of that line and 90% within 15. The longest route in that data is 4,983 miles (New York to Honolulu). For longer flights the tool says the estimate is a rough guide, because the wind matters more the longer you are up.

Worked examples
Los Angeles to Tokyo, leaving at 11 am
5,476 miles, about 11 h 51 min. Tokyo is 17 hours ahead of Los Angeles in November, so a Thursday 11 am departure on November 5, 2026 lands at about 3:51 pm on Friday. The flight back is about 10 h 55 min, and you land “before” you took off.
New York to Rome
4,267 miles, about 8 h 40 min: an evening flight lands in Rome the next morning.
Los Angeles to Honolulu
2,553 miles, about 6 h 1 min. From San Francisco it is 2,397 miles, about 5 h 41 min.
Common questions it answers
- Why is the flight home shorter (or longer)? Over the US and the Atlantic the jet stream blows from west to east, so eastbound flights are faster. New York to Paris is about 7 h 30 min; Paris to New York about 8 h 10 min.
- Why does the map line curve? The shortest path between two points on a globe is a great circle, which looks curved on a flat map. Flights to Asia from the US head north toward Alaska for this reason.
- Is it the time in the air? It is the scheduled time from gate to gate, the number on your ticket, including taxiing.
