Quick answer: the Amex Platinum Card pays up to $500 when a trip is delayed more than six hours by weather, a mechanical problem or lost travel papers, and up to $10,000 when a covered reason makes you cancel or cut the trip short. The Amex Gold Card has delay cover only after twelve hours, up to $300, and no cancellation cover. Chase Sapphire Reserve and Preferred cover all four: a delay (after six or twelve hours, or an overnight stay), a cancellation, a lost bag and a late bag. Capital One Venture X and Venture cover a delay, a cancellation (airline tickets only) and a lost bag. Each benefit asks you to pay the trip with the card, and each has its own list of covered reasons: changing your mind is on none of them.
How to use it
Pick your card and what happened: a delay, a cancellation before you leave, a trip cut short, a lost or damaged bag, or a bag that arrived late. Then say why, how many hours, which bag, and how you paid the trip; add what it cost you to see how much the card pays back. The answer says covered, not covered, ask first or no such cover, and quotes the sentence of the card’s own plan each part rests on, with the claim deadline. Under it, every other card for the same trip, so you can see which card in your wallet to book the next one with.
Every card, side by side
From each card’s own plan documents and Guide to Benefits, read on October 16, 2026. A dash means the card has no such cover.

Which American Express card carries which plan comes from the links on Amex’s own terms pages; a card on none of them, like the Blue Cash cards, has none of the three. For Capital One, Your eligibility is determined by your financial institution.

The covered reasons are a list
A delay or a cancellation is covered only when its reason is on the plan’s list. Chase writes the delay must occur due to equipment failure, inclement weather, strike, or hijacking/skyjacking
, and Capital One Covered Hazards means equipment failure, inclement weather, strike and hijacking/skyjacking.
American Express writes Covered Losses include Covered Trip delays that result from the following:
and names weather, a carrier’s equipment failure, terrorism and lost passports, but not a strike: the tool says ask first there. A crew shortage, air traffic control or an overbooked flight is on none of the lists. For a cancellation, Chase’s list is the longest (illness, a family emergency, severe weather, jury duty, a damaged home), Capital One’s the shortest: The death, Accidental Bodily Injury, disease or physical illness of You or an Immediate Family Member of the Insured person; or
an airline going bust.
Worked examples
- Eight hours stuck by a storm on the Platinum Card. Amex Platinum: yes, trip delay cover up to $500 per trip: meals and a hotel, paid back with receipts.
- A fourteen-hour strike delay on an Amex Gold. Amex Gold: ask before you count on it: the list says “include” and names no strike. The Sapphire cards name it.
- Cancelling for jury duty on a Venture X. Venture X or Venture: no, not for this. A Sapphire Reserve or an Amex Platinum would pay.
- A carry-on stolen on an Amex Gold. Amex Gold: yes, lost or damaged bag cover up to $1,250 per traveler.
- A bag 40 hours late on a Sapphire Reserve. Sapphire Reserve: yes, delayed bag cover up to $200 (2 days at $100) for clothes and toiletries until it turns up.
- A bag lost on an award ticket booked with airline miles, on the Platinum Card. Amex Platinum: no, not for this: Amex’s baggage plan counts its own points, not airline miles.
Common mistakes
- Booking part of the trip on another card. American Express asks you to
charge the full amount of a Covered Trip to your Eligible Card
; Chase and Capital One’s delay cover only need a portion on the card. - Claiming for a short delay. The Amex Gold plan pays only after twelve hours, the Sapphire Preferred after twelve hours or a night away.
- Cancelling because plans changed. Chase is plain:
It doesn’t provide coverage if the Covered Traveler simply chooses to change plans, is not feeling well but still able to travel, or the Covered Traveler can reach their destination but decides not to travel.
- Waiting too long. Chase wants notice of a lost bag
within twenty (20) days of the date the Covered Traveler’s baggage was lost, damaged, or stolen or as soon as reasonably possible.
- Booking after the storm had a name. Amex leaves out
Covered Losses that are made public or known to the Eligible Traveler prior to the departure for the Covered Trip.
- Expecting a late bag to be paid on the way home. Chase:
There is no coverage when the Covered Traveler returns to their point of origin.

It leaves out Financial insolvency of a travel agency, tour operator, or Travel Supplier.
What does Chase Sapphire travel insurance cover?
Both Sapphire cards cover a trip delay ($500 a traveler, after six hours on the Reserve and twelve on the Preferred, or an overnight stay), trip cancellation and interruption ($10,000 a traveler, $20,000 a trip), a lost bag ($3,000 a traveler) and a late bag ($100 a day for up to five days, after six hours). Paying only part of the fare with the card, or with Chase points, counts.
Does Capital One have travel insurance?
Venture X and Venture are Visa Infinite cards, and Capital One’s Visa Infinite guide covers a trip delay ($500 a ticket after six hours or a night), trip cancellation and interruption ($2,000 a traveler, for nonrefundable carrier tickets only) and lost luggage ($3,000 a trip). Its Visa Signature guide has lost luggage only. Capital One says Your eligibility is determined by your financial institution.
Does a credit card cover a delayed flight?
Only some, only past a wait, and only for listed reasons: weather or a mechanical problem on every card that has it, a strike on Chase and Capital One. Chase writes This benefit applies if the Covered Traveler’s Common Carrier is delayed for more than six (6) hours or requires an overnight stay.
It pays meals, a hotel and similar costs, after what the airline pays.
Does credit card travel insurance cover a lost bag?
On most premium cards. The Amex Platinum pays up to $2,000 for a checked bag and $3,000 for a carry-on, the Amex Gold $500 and $1,250, the Sapphire cards $3,000 a traveler, Capital One $3,000 a trip. Chase limits jewelry and electronics to $500 each, and Amex its high risk items to $1,000 (Platinum) or $250.
Am I covered if I booked with points or miles?
With the card’s own points, yes on all of them. With airline miles it depends: Amex’s trip delay and cancellation plans count rewards awarded from a frequent flyer program or similar program
, but its baggage plan does not, and Chase and Capital One’s delay and bag cover need only a portion of the fare on the card.
How long do I have to file a claim?
American Express’s trip plans say You must notify the Administrator of your claim within sixty (60) days of the Covered Loss or the claim may not be honored.
Its baggage plan asks for notice within 30 days, Chase within 20 days for a cancellation or a bag, and Capital One within 30 days of a delay and 20 of a cancellation or a lost bag.
