Miami to Key West Journey: The Best & Worst Times

View More ->

,

I mentioned

Key West

so many times in my posts that you are probably tired of the same topic.

Key West is the southernmost point of the USA, where

Cuba

is nearby (only 300 miles away), where Hemingway’s house is, and a place that you should definitely visit!

But today,

I want to tell you about the road to this beautiful place,

which is very picturesque and interesting.

It is a road that links a network of islands in the south of North America.

We were here 5 years ago, but if I travel to Florida again, I will definitely drive along this road again!

We drove to the Florida Keys along

the scenic Overseas Highway

, which passes through the islands

of Key Largo

and Islamorada, the city of Marathon, Bahia Honda State Park, Big Pine, and dozens of other coral islands to Key West, the southernmost city in the United States.

What Are The Best Times To Drive To Key West From Miami?

I advise you to drive from December to May.

It is the best time to drive when the weather is pleasant and there is almost no rain.

When it is not the peak of tourist season and there are not so many cars on the road.

And on the way to

Key West

and back, don’t miss the unforgettable sunsets for fantastic photo reports!

What Is The Worst Time To Drive From Miami To Key West?

The period from December

to February is the worst time to drive from Miami to Key West

.

It is the peak of tourist season, with correspondingly high traffic.

From June to October, it is hot and humid, and there is every chance of catching a hurricane on the road.

Most often, it is windy on the road, so take a jacket.

Is it Safe to Drive from Key West to Miami?

Yes!

The road partly passes through the islands and partly along the bridges built between the islands.

Overseas Highway

is one of the world’s longest highways built over water.

On the way from Miami to Key West, we drove across all 42 bridges between the islands, including the famous

7 Mile Bridge,

one of the main attractions of the Florida Keys.

And even after a while, we still remember in all their colors the mesmerizing views of the seascapes that inspired us incredibly!

How Long Does It Take To Drive From Miami To Key West?

162 miles, 3 hours.

The road, I must say, is not close; from Miami to Key West, it is about 162 miles and takes about 3 hours to drive.

The road partly passes through the islands and partly along the bridges built between the islands.

How Many Bridges Are Between Miami and Key West?

There are 42 bridges between Miami and Key West.

Never exceed the speed limit on a highway passing through the

Florida Keys

.

The police there strictly monitor compliance with the rules on the roads!

The longest of the bridges is the Seven Mile Bridge

.

There we made our first stop.

This bridge connects Marathon and the Lower Reefs.

When you drive along it at this slow speed of 47mph (this is the maximum allowed for most of the route), there is time to look at the sea and the so-called

Parallel Bridge

, the remains of a railway built at the beginning of the last century to connect reefs with the mainland.

The bridge builders had to take into account the height of the waves, the depth of the sea,

the strength of the

wind, and the nature and influence of the currents.

Before, there used to be a railroad between Miami and

Key West.

It was conceived by American oil and railroad magnate Henry Flagler.

The grand construction began in 1905.

Of the 43 miles of the route, 37 miles ran

across the sea on bridges

.

4,000 people were involved in the construction.

The work progressed slowly; Florida is a restless state, and

therefore hurricanes

destroyed it several times.

The railway functioned successfully until 1935, when a monstrous hurricane, called the

“Storm of the

Century,” destroyed most of the buildings.

About 400 people died.

The damage was so great that the company that operated the road went bankrupt and was sold for next to nothing to the

state of Florida

.

The state did not rebuild the railroad, instead redesigning it as a highway that opened in 1938.

B

ig Coppitt Key, Bay Point, Sugarloaf Shores, Perky, Summerland Key, Pirates Cove, Big Pine, Marathon, Valhalla, Conch Key, Duck Key, Layton, Craig, Matecumbe, Islamorada, Tavernier, Sunset Point, Key Largo, Anglers Park, Garden Cove, Jewfish, Homestead, South Miami Heights, Kendall, Tamiami, Coral Gables…

Is it Worth Driving From Miami to Key West?

Yes.

It is one of the great American roads.

It leads through the reefs made famous by Humphrey Bogart to the island city where Ernest Hemingway fled from the bustle.

A trip to the

Florida Keys

is a road trip in the spirit of a classic American road movie: it’s not where you go that matters, but what happens to you along the way…

There is a 50-mph speed limit throughout the track.

But to be honest, I didn’t want to go faster, and the monotonous speed did not dull my attention because there were so many interesting things to see.

And these were not only the beautiful seascapes of the islands connecting with long bridges but also a huge number of different restaurants, shops, hotels, aqua centers, dolphinariums, yacht clubs, and so on.

Finally, we got to Key West.

It suddenly turned out that this town is firstly quite large; you can’t drive around in five minutes, and secondly, it is also very beautiful, with a mass of elegant wooden houses in the “colonial” style.

Miami vs.

Key West: The Ultimate Showdown for Your Next Vacation Destination

On the way to the

Florida Keys

, acquaintance with Miami is still inevitable.

Despite the fact that it is not

even the capital of the state, the name of the city is widely known

.

Miami itself is an ordinary metropolis with administrative buildings, a central park, a quarter of emigrants, and an “old city”.

Another thing is

Miami Beach

, also part of the Greater Miami agglomeration, an archipelago city of endless beaches, the sound of the surf of the Atlantic Ocean, and the mood of an eternal vacation.

As for Key West,it is a stunning

beach resort and the capital of the Florida

Keys.

You can get here along one of the most beautiful roads in the United States, stretching right across the ocean.

But be careful, because as the locals like to tell tourists, “you need to arrive at Key West for 2 hours and leave immediately.” Otherwise, you will stay here forever.”

And indeed, the resort is unlike any other city in the world; everyone here is so good-natured, relaxed, and truly happy every day.

And the wonderful climate, vibrant nature, and gentle ocean with insanely beautiful coral reefs make you seriously wonder if you really should stay in this paradise.
