How to use it

Pick the day you go; today on Jekyll Island is filled in. The answer is that day’s lowest low tide between sunrise and sunset, with its time and height, or, when both lows fall in the dark, their times and the next day with a low in daylight. Below it: the whole tide chart for the day (both highs and both lows), the week ahead with each day’s lowest daylight low (tap a day to open it), and the walk to Shark Tooth Beach in the Jekyll Island Authority’s own words.

Where the tides come from

NOAA has no tide station at Shark Tooth Beach. The nearest it predicts is Jekyll Island Marina on Jekyll Creek, about a mile from the Summer Waves entrance where the walk begins; NOAA works out its tides from its Fernandina Beach station. These are predictions, not measurements, in feet above mean lower low water (MLLW), the datum NOAA gives them in, so a minus height is a low tide below that average. Sunrise and sunset are worked out for the Summer Waves entrance. The Jekyll Island Authority’s own advice is short: “Check tide charts before adventuring out!” It does not say which tide; this page gives you the tides and leaves that to you.

Common mistakes

  • Reading a high tide’s time as the low. Each day has two of each; the chart above marks which is which.
  • Planning on the afternoon low in late fall and winter. Some days both lows fall in the dark: five or six a month from November to January.
  • Driving to the beach. “There’s no vehicular access to the area known as shark tooth beach”, says the Jekyll Island Authority: park and walk from the gate past Summer Waves.
  • Taking a prediction for the water you will find. These are NOAA’s predictions for Jekyll Creek, about a mile from the start of the walk, not readings at the beach.

Plan the rest of the trip

Make a Georgia and Florida coast trip of it: up the coast is Savannah and its haunted places, and to the south Florida has its own rules on collecting seashells and its best shelling beaches.
