Passport & Visa Photo Maker

Pick the document, choose a photo, and tap the top of the head, the eyes and the chin: the photo is cropped to the official size with the head inside the rules. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing in the photo is changed.

Your photo stays on this device: it is opened and cropped by your browser.

U.S. passport photo size

2 ร— 2 inches, the head 1 to 1โ…œ in51 ร— 51 mm, and 25โ€“35 mm from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, with the eyes 1โ…› to 1โ…œ in from the bottom. Choose a photo to crop it to that size.

Rules: the U.S. Department of State’s passport photo page, read September 28, 2026.

A U.S. passport photo is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair and the eyes 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom. A Schengen visa photo is 35 × 45 mm, the face 70–80% of the height. This maker crops your own photo to those rules in your browser, free.

    How to use it

Pick the document, choose a photo, then tap three places on it: the top of the hair, between the eyes, and the bottom of the chin. The photo is cropped at once to the document’s size, with the head at the middle of the official range. Two sliders make the head bigger or smaller and move it up or down, but only inside the rules, and the result lists the head and eye heights next to each rule. Then save the photo as a JPEG, or save a 4 × 6 print with the photos laid out to cut: order it as a 4 × 6 print at any photo counter, at 100%, never “fit to page”.

Your photo is opened by your browser and never uploaded. Nothing in it is changed: no filter, no smoothing, no new background. The State Department’s own photo tool does the same thing: it lets you “resize and rotate it if necessary” and “crop it to a square image of exactly 600 x 600 pixels”. If your photo has too little background around the head for the crop, the tool says so and asks for a new photo instead of painting background in.

    The rules, document by document

Each size below is quoted from the agency’s own page, read on September 28, 2026. The U.S. passport page was last updated December 15, 2025; the German missions’ Schengen checklist in April 2025.

The U.S. rules are the State Department’s passport photo page and its photo composition template: “Head must be between 1 -1 3/8 inches (25 – 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head”, and “Make sure the eye height is between 1 1/8 inches to 1 3/8 inches (28 mm – 35 mm) from the bottom of the photo”. For a digital visa photo the same template says “The top of the head, including the hair, to the bottom of the chin must be between 50% and 69% of the image’s total height.” The Schengen rule is the German missions’: “The face should take up 70–80 % of the height of the photo.”

Why some documents are not made here: Canada asks for photos “taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio”; Australia asks for prints “produced using dye sublimation (i.e. not from an inkjet printer)” and says “We do not recommend using an online passport photo service or a mobile app”; the UK paper photo must “not be a cut down version of a larger picture”, and online gov.uk says “Do not crop your photo – it will be done for you.” India is not covered yet: the Consulate General in San Francisco links a 2019 sheet (35 × 35 mm for passport services, 51 × 51 mm for visas and OCI), while VFS Global, which takes the applications in the U.S., publishes its own. Ask VFS for the size it accepts.

    Worked examples

    • A phone photo for a U.S. passport. A 3000 × 4000 photo with the top of the hair 1,000 px down, the eyes at 1,450 and the chin at 2,000. The crop is 1,684 px square, the head 1 3/16 in (30.2 mm) and the eyes 1 1/4 in (31.8 mm) from the bottom — both inside the rules — saved as a 1200 × 1200 JPEG, 600 pixels to the inch.
    • The same photo for a Schengen visa. The crop is 1,037 × 1,333 px, the face 33.8 mm of the 45: 75%, the middle of 70–80%. Saved at 827 × 1063 px, and a 4 × 6 print holds 6 photos.
    • A photo cut close to the hair. A 3000 × 4000 photo whose hair starts 60 px from the top, the eyes at 510 and the chin at 1,060. At the middle head size the crop would begin above the photo, so the tool takes the nearest bigger head that fits: 1 1/4 in (31.2 mm), still inside the rule. With the hair touching the top edge no size fits, and the tool asks for a photo taken from further back. It never fills missing background in.

    Common mistakes

    • Measuring the head without the hair. Every rule here runs from the chin to the top of the head, hair included (“the top of the head, including the hair”).
    • Printing with “fit to page”. The printer shrinks the sheet and the 2 × 2 in photo stops being 2 × 2 in. Print at 100%, or order a 4 × 6 print.
    • Cropping a photo for the online U.S. renewal or a UK passport. Both crop it themselves; a tight crop leaves them nothing to work with.
    • Editing the photo. “Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence.” A background remover or a beauty filter can get an application put on hold.
    • Glasses, and an old photo. “Take off your eyeglasses for your photo”, and the photo must be from the last 6 months (the UK: the last month).

    FAQ

What are the passport photo dimensions?

For a U.S. passport, 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair and the eyes 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom. A Schengen visa photo is 35 × 45 mm, a UK paper photo 45 × 35 mm, a Canadian one 50 × 70 mm.

What is the passport photo size in the US?

    2 × 2 inches, the same for a passport and a U.S. visa. A digital visa photo is a square of 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, a JPEG of 240 kB or less; the green card lottery takes exactly 600 × 600.

How do I make a digital passport photo?

For the online U.S. renewal, have someone take the photo against a white or off-white wall, leave a little room around your face, and upload it as it is: a JPG, PNG or HEIC of 54 KB to 10 MB. The application lets you crop it. For a DS-160 or the visa lottery, crop it to a 600 × 600 JPEG here.

Is a 2×2 photo the same as a passport photo?

For U.S. documents, yes: a U.S. passport and a U.S. visa photo are both 2 × 2 inches. Most other countries use another size: 35 × 45 mm for a Schengen visa, 45 × 35 mm for a UK paper photo.

What is the Schengen visa photo size?

35 × 45 mm, with the face 70–80% of the photo’s height (31.5–36 mm from the tip of the chin to the top of the head), against a plain background with no shadows. Those are the German missions’ rules; check the consulate you apply to.

What is the Indian passport photo size?

This tool does not make it yet. The Consulate General of India in San Francisco links a 2019 sheet with 35 × 35 mm for passport services and 51 × 51 mm for visas and OCI, but VFS Global, which takes the applications in the U.S., publishes its own. Ask VFS which size it accepts.

Can I take a passport photo at home?

For a U.S. passport, yes: the State Department lists “A friend or family member, and print your own photo on matte or glossy paper”. Have someone else take it, and use no filters. Canada and Australia want a professional photographer; the UK accepts photos from your own device online, uncropped.

Is this passport photo maker free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no watermark. It runs in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device.
