Lake Tahoe Beaches: Parking Fees, Dogs and the Water by Month
Lake Tahoe’s public beaches in the month you go: what parking costs, whether the lot is open, where a dog may go, the day Sand Harbor’s reservations open, the walk to the sand and how cold the water is — from each beach’s own manager.
October at Lake Tahoe: 16 public beaches, 2 with nothing to pay that month; 1 closedParking, dogs, the season and the walk for each, from its own manager’s page.
The lake’s surface in October: about 58 °F (14 °C) by day, mid-lake (NASA satellite, 2006–2025) — below the 70 °F that NOAA says many people find comfortable.

Lake Tahoe has dozens of public beaches; most charge $10 to $12 a car for the day, and most allow no dogs on the sand. Sand Harbor needs a day-use reservation from May 15 to September 30, and the first 200 open 90 days ahead. The water is cold: about 67 °F at the surface in July.
How to use it
Pick the month you go, a shore if you have one in mind, and tick the box if your dog comes along; for Sand Harbor in summer, pick the day too. The finder lists the public beaches that fit: what parking costs that month, whether the beach’s seasonal lot is open, where a dog may go, Sand Harbor’s summer reservation, the walk to the sand and who runs it, and for your Sand Harbor day the date each batch of reservations opens. With a dog, the beaches that let one in come first. Every line comes from the beach manager’s own page; where a page does not say, the finder says it is not posted instead of guessing.
Sixteen beaches, side by side

The Forest Service adds: “National Forest beaches and picnic areas are open for walk-ins even when the parking lots are closed.” Nevada Beach, Zephyr Cove and Camp Richardson list a parking fee without an amount on the Forest Service’s pages; the resorts set them.
El Dorado Beach, the City of South Lake Tahoe’s beach at Lakeview Commons, is shut. The city’s page: “The City of South Lake Tahoe will begin construction on Phase 2 of the El Dorado Beach Revetment and Improvement Project on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.” It lists the beach, Lakeview Commons, the boat ramp and their lot as closed, and gives no reopening date. Regan Beach, nearby, stays open. Hidden Beach and Memorial Point on the East Shore are not in the finder: no manager’s page prints their fee or their dog rule.
Dogs at Lake Tahoe’s beaches
Most managers keep dogs off the sand. Baldwin Beach’s page puts it plainly: “pets are not allowed in designated swim areas such as Baldwin Beach.” Four places take a dog: Regan Beach, where “Dogs are permitted only in the Dog Water Park area at the East end of the park, furthest from the playground and volleyball court.”; Kings Beach, where “Dogs allowed at Dog Beach which is located at the east of the Park beyond the boat ramp (rocky area).”; Kiva, where “Leashed pets are permitted in the picnic area, the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, and the Tallac Historic Site.”; and Sand Harbor in the off-season: “Pets are only allowed off-season from October 15 to April 15 and must be kept on a leash of not more than six feet in length.”
Sand Harbor’s reservation
“Day Use Reservations are required for entry from 8:00am to 10:30am, seven days a week, May 15 through September 30.” The entry fee is “$10.00 ($15.00 for Non-NV Vehicles)”.
The spots do not open all at once. Nevada State Parks’ announcement of the system sets three batches: “Tier One: 200 day-use reservations are reservable 90 days in advance.” “Tier Two: 100 day-use reservations are reservable 30 days in advance.” “Tier Three: 50 day-use reservations are reservable 7 days in advance.” On the day itself, “Same day reservations can be made up until 10:29 am the day of arrival”, and those skip the fee: “the $5.00 fee is a processing fee that is charged on all reservations. Visitors who make a same-day reservation will not be charged the reservation fee.”
Pick a day in the finder and it counts back. For Saturday, July 3, 2027, the Fourth of July weekend: 200 spots open Sunday, April 4, 2027, 100 more on Thursday, June 3, 2027 and the last 50 on Saturday, June 26, 2027. The batches are from the park’s 2024 announcement; its FAQ, read October 15, 2026, keeps the same-day rule and the fee and prints no other schedule. One FAQ answer says reservations start May 1, while the park’s page and the FAQ’s other answer say May 15; the finder follows May 15. Book only on reservenevada.com: the park does not sell them at the gate.
How cold is the water?
NASA’s satellite puts the lake’s surface mid-lake at about 67 °F by day in July and 67 °F in August — its warmest — and about 40 °F in January. NOAA’s guide says “many people feel “comfortable” swimming in water that is 70° to 78° Fahrenheit” and warns that “even in the summer, prolonged immersion in water temperatures below 70° Fahrenheit can produce hypothermia.” Shallow coves can warm sooner than the open lake; the satellite does not measure them. Every month in the Lake Tahoe water temperature tool.
Worked examples
July, with a dog. July with a dog: 3 of 16 beaches let a dog in — Regan Beach, Kiva Beach and Kings Beach.
January, with a dog. January with a dog: 4 of 16 beaches let a dog in — Sand Harbor, Regan Beach, Kiva Beach and Kings Beach — Sand Harbor’s off-season rule adds it.
December on the South Shore. December at Lake Tahoe on the South Shore: 6 public beaches, 3 with nothing to pay that month; 1 closed: the Forest Service lots at Pope and Baldwin are closed, so you walk in, Kiva never charges, and El Dorado is shut for the city’s works.
Common mistakes
- Driving to Sand Harbor on a summer morning without a reservation. From May 15 to September 30 a car needs one to enter before 10:30 a.m.
- Waiting for the last week to book Sand Harbor. The big batch, 200 spots, opens 90 days before the day; only 50 open in the last week.
- Bringing a dog to Kings Beach’s sand. “Dogs are not allowed on the beach at Kings Beach SRA year round.” — only on the rocky Dog Beach east of the boat ramp.
- Expecting to drive down to the water at Emerald Bay. “Access to Vikingsholm is via a steep two mile out and back hike.” “The return is a 400 ft elevation climb within one mile at elevation of 6800 ft.”
- Parking on the highway for Chimney Beach. The Tahoe Transportation District’s new lot holds about 130 cars: “Paid parking will begin June 1 at a daily rate of $12 between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m”.
- Trusting a warm July day for a long swim. The open lake averages below 70 °F in every month, July and August included.
