The interview

CBP’s own words, read on its Global Entry pages (Internet Archive copies of September 24–30, 2026).

Quick answer: you can renew Global Entry from one year before the expiry date on your card. Send the renewal before it expires and you keep using Global Entry up to 24 months after that date while CBP finishes. The fee is $120 for five years, and a renewal may need no interview at all.

    How to use it

Type the expiry date printed on your Global Entry card and say whether you have sent the renewal, and when. The answer says whether the renewal window is open, whether you are still covered and until which date, and, if you type the date of your next trip abroad, whether Global Entry will work on it. Under it are CBP’s own words on the renewal interview, and below, every airport where you can do the interview when you land, without an appointment.

    The rules, in CBP’s words

    • The window: “You become eligible to renew your membership one year prior to program expiration.”
    • The 24 months: “If you submit a renewal application before your membership expires, you will be able to continue to use benefits up to 24 months after your membership expiration date.”
    • The fee: “The application fee is $120, and membership lasts for five years.”
    • The interview: “An interview for program membership renewal may not be necessary.” “Once you submit your renewal application and fee, check your TTP account periodically for updates on what actions are necessary to complete the renewal process.”
    • By video: “Now you can renew your Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI membership right from home with the remote interview process.” “Some renewing Global Entry members who are conditionally approved are eligible to participate in the pilot.” Among the criteria: “Be at least 18 years of age;” “Have a photo on file with CBP that was taken (1) within the past 10 years, and (2) after the applicant was 14 years of age; and” “Have previously submitted fingerprints to CBP.” “Interviews will take approximately 15 minutes.”
    • Without an appointment: “Your Global Entry enrollment interview can be completed without the need to schedule an appointment at an Enrollment Center.” For Enrollment on Arrival, “Only those who are entering the U.S. Customs and Border Protection area after arriving from an international flight can participate in EoA.”

The tool counts a month from the same day of the month, and from the 31st to the last day of a shorter month. It reads CBP’s pages; it is not CBP, and your TTP account has the last word.

    Worked examples

A card that expires on March 15, 2027. The window opened on March 15, 2026. Send the renewal before March 15, 2027 and Global Entry keeps working up to March 15, 2029 if CBP has not finished. A trip on June 1, 2027 is covered only if the renewal went in before the card expired.

A card that expired on May 1, 2026, renewal sent on time. Still covered up to May 1, 2028, while CBP finishes.

The same card, renewal sent in June 2026. No extra 24 months: they cover only a renewal sent before the card expires. Use the regular lines until it is approved.

    Common mistakes

    • Waiting for the expiry date. The 24 months after it count only if the renewal went in before it.
    • Booking an enrollment center appointment you may not need. A renewal may need no interview; if it does, it can be by video for some renewing members, or on arrival from an international flight.
    • Going to an Enrollment on Arrival booth after a domestic flight. It is only for travelers arriving from an international flight.
    • Forgetting the new passport. “Global Entry cards are not accepted at Global Entry kiosks, which require passports or U.S. lawful permanent resident cards.” And “All Global Entry members can update their passport information through their TTP account.” (A new name means a visit to an enrollment center.)

Enrollment on Arrival: the interview when you land

For a conditionally approved applicant, CBP lists these airports and preclearance locations, with the booth’s hours (68 on its page of 2026-09-24). “A Global Entry conditionally approved applicant may simply arrive at an EoA booth in the CBP Federal Inspection Services area at a participating airport.” Enrollment on Departure, before a flight out, is at Miami International Airport (MIA): Monday through Saturday from 8am to 6pm ET.

    FAQ

When can I renew Global Entry?

From one year before the expiry date on your card: “You become eligible to renew your membership one year prior to program expiration.” There is no reason to wait for the last month.

Is there a Global Entry renewal grace period?

Yes, if you renew in time: “If you submit a renewal application before your membership expires, you will be able to continue to use benefits up to 24 months after your membership expiration date.” A renewal sent after the card expires gets no extra months.

Do I need a Global Entry renewal interview?

Maybe not. CBP: “An interview for program membership renewal may not be necessary.” If CBP asks for one, some renewing members can do it by video from home, and anyone conditionally approved can do it on arrival from an international flight at an Enrollment on Arrival airport.

How does the Global Entry interview work on arrival?

It is Enrollment on Arrival: “Enrollment on Arrival (EoA) is CBP process that allows Global Entry applicants who are conditionally approved to complete their interviews upon arrival into the United States”. You need no appointment and no sign-up, only your passport and proof of where you live: “To complete the interview via EoA, you must be in possession of the following documents: A valid passport.”

What is the Global Entry renewal fee?

$120, the same as a first application: “The application fee is $120, and membership lasts for five years.”

What happens if my Global Entry expired?

If you sent the renewal before it expired, you keep using Global Entry up to 24 months after the expiry date. If not, it stopped on that date; log in to your TTP account to see what it offers you.

    How to renew Global Entry?

Log in to the Trusted Traveler Programs website, select Renew on your Global Entry membership, update the application and pay the $120. Then “Once you submit your renewal application and fee, check your TTP account periodically for updates on what actions are necessary to complete the renewal process.”
