Countries: the United Nations’ 193 member states and 2 observer states. Maps: Natural Earth (public domain).
There are 195 countries to count: the United Nations’ 193 member states and its 2 observer states, the Holy See and Palestine. Tap the ones you have been to on the map, or tick them in the list, and the map shows your count, the share of the 195, your continents and how much of the world’s land you have stood on. The U.S. map does the same for the 50 states.
How to use it
Tap a country on the map to color it in; tap it again to take it out. The smallest countries (Singapore, Malta, the Caribbean and Pacific islands) are too small to tap as shapes, so they are dots, and every country is also in the list under the map’s form, by continent, with a search box. Switch to U.S. states for the 50 states, with Washington, DC as a dot. Your map lives in the link: copy it to keep it, share it, or come back and add a trip. Share my result can turn the map into a picture, Print my map prints it on its own, and Put my map on my blog gives the code that shows your map on your own site.
What counts as a country
The count is the United Nations’ list: the 193 member states on its member states page, and the two non-member states with a standing invitation as observers on its non-member states page. The United Kingdom is one member state, as are Denmark and France with their territories. The map also draws seven other places you may have been: Greenland, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Kosovo, Western Sahara, the Falkland Islands and New Caledonia. Tap them and they are counted apart (“other places”), never inside the 195.
| Continent | Countries |
|---|---|
| Africa | 54 |
| Asia | 48 |
| Europe | 44 |
| North America | 23 |
| Oceania | 14 |
| South America | 12 |
The continents are Natural Earth’s: Russia is in Europe and Türkiye in Asia, and island countries in the open ocean take the United Nations’ region (the Maldives: Asia; the Seychelles: Africa). The share of the world’s land adds up each country’s area on Natural Earth’s 1:50m map, on a sphere; Antarctica is left out.
Worked examples
- France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Canada and Japan: 6 countries, 3.1% of the 195, on 3 continents, and 10.2% of the world’s land, most of it Canada.
- A Caribbean cruise to the Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico: 3 countries (1.5%) and 1 other place: Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, not a UN state.
- A road trip through Alabama, Alaska and Arizona: 3 of 50 states, 6%. Every state is 50 of 50; Washington, DC is shown apart.
Common mistakes
- Counting a territory as a country. Puerto Rico, Greenland and Hong Kong are part of other countries: here they add to “other places” or to their country, never to the 195.
- Counting England, Scotland and Wales as three. They are one UN member state, the United Kingdom.
- Losing the map. Nothing is stored on our side: copy the link (or bookmark it) after each trip.
