There are many dog parks, dog-friendly restaurants, and cafes in Chicago.

I like that I can easily find many establishments that keep food and water for dogs by the way.

There are many places in the city specifically made for, and reserved for dogs.

These are where dogs play and socialize with each other.

There are rules you are required by law to follow in Chicago as a dog owner.

These rules are designed to keep your dog safe and prevent it from being a nuisance to the public.

You are legally responsible for your dog and every injury or damage to property it caused.

If you fail to clean up the feces of your dog, you will pay a fine of $500.

It is your responsibility as a dog owner to ensure the dog is well cared for, and given adequate exercise.

Where the dog is living must be clean always, and the dog must be cared for properly.

You must not keep your dog in a car without proper ventilation.

You have to protect it from heat and cold at all times.

Register your pet

Every dog up to four months and above in Chicago must be registered with the city’s local authority.

Before your dog is accepted for registration, you must show evidence that you have vaccinated it against rabies.

When a dog is registered in Chicago, it is a sign to show it is rabies-free.

If your dog’s rabies vaccination is for a year, the local authority will give you a dog registration emblem that will last for one year.

If the vaccination lasts for three years, you will receive a registration for three years.

You can do the registration online at the Chicago City Clerk website.

You can better go in person to any of the Chicago City Clerk offices.

You will pay $5 per year for the registration.

The registration fee for unsterilized pets is $50 per year.

Vaccinations and leash laws in Chicago

Chicago’s law states that all family pets must be vaccinated against rabies.

To ensure the vaccination is current, you must give your dog the booster shots anytime it is due.

Other things you must vaccinate your dog against, according to the Chicago law, are Distemper, Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis, and Bordetella.

The law of the city is strict on leashes.

You must obey this law as a dog owner.

You must put your dog on a leash anytime you bring it out to the public.

You are free to let your dog move freely within a fenced private property as long as it will not be able to run away.

Anytime you take the dog to a public park or a beach, you must put it on a leash, unless the dog is within a dog-friendly area, that is where you can take it off the leash.

Dog-friendly areas in Chicago

There are places in Chicago specifically designated for dogs.

They are called “Dog-friendly areas” (DFAs).

These are places you can take your dog for exercise and socialization.

You will see such places within most Chicago public parks and beaches.

These are the only places you are free to let your dog off the leash.

There are doggie water fountains in most dog-friendly areas.

You will see cleaning-up stations, separate enclosures for small and timid dogs, bulletin boards for dog owners, and trash bins for dog waste.

You can get a park permit and tag from a participating vet if you want your dog to visit dog-friendly areas.

You have to show the vet the proof of rabies vaccination of the dog and other mandatory vaccinations.

You must also fill out a Chicago Park District Dog-Friendly Area Permit Application form and pay $5 per dog to the vet.

As a dog owner, you are responsible for your dog in dog-friendly areas.

You must watch it all the time while it is in the facility.

Do not forget to clean up after your pet.

If your dog is not up to four months or your female dog is in the heat, it will not be allowed into the dog-friendly area.

Can I bring my dog to Chicago?

Your dog must be vaccinated against rabies, dewormed, and fully immunized before it is qualified to come to the dog-friendly areas.

You must get a permit from the Park District and a dog license before your dog will be allowed entry into the facility.

You will pay a fine of $500 if your dog is found in dog-friendly areas without a valid permit.
