The Fortezza Nuova was inspired from the plant with five points from where Bernardo Buontalenti designed and built this in the 16th century as a fortress during the Medici government.<\/p>\n

The fortress is beautiful and well preserved, and it is accessed by a small bridge where you need to enter the walls.<\/p>\n

The interior has been transformed into a park with trees and benches that are cool even on the hottest days.<\/p>\n

After remaining closed for many years, this magnificent fortress was reopened to the public.<\/p>\n

Outside it is really beautiful and impressive, though at various points you can observe some signs of decay and neglect left by citizens of Livorno; while internally it has a very unusual feature for a fortress;<\/p>\n

However, there is also another room located near the entrance of the villa where you can see some skeletons of dolphins and two impressive cetaceans.<\/p>\n

Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori<\/h2>\n

The Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori is located inside the park of Villa Mimbelli, a beautiful structure that houses the museum.<\/p>\n

Inside you will find many paintings by Macchiaioli, including several works by Giovanni Fattori. The works are impressive and the interior of the villa is also an admirable work of art.<\/p>\n

Look on the ground floor room that is designed in Moorish Oriental style, it is spectacular! Unfortunately the outside of the villa should be restored and the administration must make a lot more promotion for the museum visit.<\/p>\n

This little known museum is the added attraction to a splendid nineteenth century villa that is beautifully decorated with frescoes and Murano chandeliers.<\/p>\n

The first two floors is quite simple and has a collection of paintings about the Port of Livorno. On the 2nd floor, guests are often left in awe after seeing paintings about war.<\/p>\n

Two rooms are dedicated to the founder of the Macchiaioli, and all his displayed paintings are excellent.<\/p>\n

There are other notable works of Signorini League, Superb Pointillist and the framework of Garibaldi in the last room and a few portraits of Corcos.<\/p>\n

Free things to do in Livorno<\/h2>\n

Eremo di Santa Maria alla Sambuca<\/h2>\n

The Eremo di Santa Maria alla Sambuca is a short trip out of town. The hermitage is uninhabited but the site where it is located is surrounded by a picturesque forest with the stream next.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth the approximately two-hour walk and can also be explored by bike.<\/p>\n

The path in the woods is only a few kilometers from Livorno and there is a road connecting the Valle Benedetta hermitage of Sambuca in the green hills of Livorno.<\/p>\n

The route winds through shaded areas and breathtaking views from the spacious lawns. In fact, you can see the view of the city and the sea in areas without trees.<\/p>\n

The walk lasts 2\/3 hours between return, depends on the dwell time to the Hermitage. At the park, there are also picnic tables and ample spaces for parking.<\/p>\n
