Tuscany Horse Riding

My girlfriend and I will be visiting the Tuscany countryside in early July. We are camping for a few nights in Barberino Val d’Elsa. She loves horses and I would like to take her on a horse riding day trip in Tuscany. We are renting a car and visiting some of the hills towns and beautiful countryside for 2 days, so I don’t want an extended horse riding trek, just a a day trip. I was wondering if anyone knows of some around the Barberino Val d’Elsa area? We aren’t planning on renting the car for the day we are doing the horse trip, so I would prefer something somewhat closer to the campground (maybe like a 10-15km radius), but we can take bus/train to get there, no problem. Any advice or recommendations will be appreciated.

Also, for our 2 days of traveling in the car, if you have some “don’t miss places” I would love to hear that too
Thanks a lot.

  1. Don’t miss places… Here you go,

We particularly enjoyed Monteriggioni, a walled village with many towes still standing. You can walk the ramparts for incredible views. It is a small village in the middle of vineyards so you don’t have to fight your way through a modern city to get to it. There is also a nice park in the center if you prefer picnics to restaurants. Good restaurants too.

Another nice, very small stone village is Montefioralle just above Greve. You can walk if you like but there is parking just at the edge of town. It’s another walled village. We ate at Taverna del Guerrino and enjoyed it. The view from the terrace is incredible.

BTW, Montefioralle is not on our Michelin map of Italy but it is signposted from Greve.

Poggibonsi and San Gimignano are both nice visits but we preferred Volterra just a few kilometers further. The entire area is beautiful so you won’t have to look far for things to see.

Have a great trip, and don’t fall off the horse!

  2. Hi Zaky

Barberino Val d’Elsa is a beautiful place which retains its mediveal structure even after so many years. You will find a no of horse riding spots and you can get a day trip as you expect but you need to negotiate well before. First you need to decide on the accomodation for 2 of you and you can easily find horse riding spots nearby.

You must visit Chianti, San Gimignano. Don’t miss tasting the Chianti super Tuscan wines and also if possible accomodate a little time for Tuscan cooking. Since you will be there for just 2-3 days utilize it in the best way possible.
