It has been a couple of months since my best family and I came back from holidays in Peru but I still feel like it was yesterday. Peru is a beautiful travel destination in Central and South America that must consider visiting for your next holiday. In fact, it is considered a leading destination, as there is so much to see and do at any given time of the year. It is for this reason that we had settled on Iquitos, Arequipa and Mancora because we were sure that we could not exhaust all the attractions in a single visit. This way we would be sure of where to pick up from when we make a second visit in future. Iquitos was great as we got o explore the Peruvian Amazon basin and all its attractions.
The Pilipintuwasi Butterfly Farm is one of the places that we went to because of our love for nature. There were many pick pocketing monkeys that the children were so excited to see. We also were lucky enough to spot pink dolphins that were simply amazing. An admission fee is charged for this fantastic trip and this is understandable because the place has staff that is caring. In addition, the animals and the beautiful butterflies are also well cared for that we spent quite a bit of time just to look at them. My daughter loved the butterflies the most and even wanted to catch some.
The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is another must visit attraction that you need to visit when you travel to Peru. This reserve is also the largest in Peru and boasts of countless swamps, lakes as well as water holes that support various species of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. If you are wondering how you can exhaust this entire reserve with one visit then you need to know that you require several visits to tour every part of the reserve. In our case, we went to the Ivy Mara Ey that is the only real eco lodge with fantastic spots that completed our experience leaving us with a feeling of joy and calm. The only set back is the presence of many mosquitoes that will remind you that you are in the jungle. While here, you can be sure of many sightings of local fauna and flora most of which were quite exciting for the children. It is a great place for adventure.
Staying within the Amazon, we also went to Tapiche Ohara reserve where we had a perfect jungle experience and we loved every moment we were there. Unfortunately, the children did not like it because they got tired along the way. We encountered monkeys here before getting to the lodge where we spent the night. The bathrooms at the lodge were good; the hammocks were comfortable while the food too was good. While here, we witnessed the release of one of the tortoises back into the wild. Bottom-line is that do not go there with children because they may not have fun apart from the little excitement from seeing the monkeys, birds and other animals.
You can also go to the Acobia DWAzoo that is ideal for people of all ages as well as children. The only hurdle is getting there but the drivers are experienced thus once you get there you can be sure it is awesome. The children loved petting and feeding the manatees. It is quite surreal to feed the baby manatee but also exciting. In addition to this experience, we also go to learn about the manatees and how the zoo has been instrumental in reintroducing them into the wild.
We also had a chance to go to Belen market that is quite interesting as it sits above the Belen floating city. This market has very narrow aisles yet it also boasts of having some exotic goods that you cannot find anywhere else. For instance, we were shocked to see commodities like snake oil, tapir meat as well as turtle meat and eggs. We also went on a canoe ride around Belen and this was such an exciting adventure. Ironically, the locals here are used to the canoe rides because this is the only way they get to travel from the church to the store or school among other places. There are floating houses that have televisions. Generally, a quick visit of this market will be great because it is not a tourist market but an everyday working market. We had been told to watch our belongings so we took off our watches as well as bracelets and other jewelry before heading there.
The Quistococha Park is also a great place to visit, as it is not only scenic but it also has a wide variety of parrots and tanagers. There is also a lake where you can enjoy a swim or paddle a well as a zoo. The place is quite scenic and you will definitely like the variety of fauna that include the pink dolphin. You could be lucky enough to see a jaguar among other animals that are only common in the wild.
We were fascinated by nature’s hospital that is a plant medicine centre located in the lush jungle retreat centre. There is an indigenous healer here who took us on a plant medicine tour through the virgin forest as he shared the stories of the illnesses that he has been able to heal. Even then, we did not stay here for a long time. We also went on a tour of Patio del Ekeko that is a boiling point of culture and magic. It is also a great place to go shopping. However, you should not expect a lot of Peruvian stuff. We also noticed that the shops are pricey. After walking along the street for hours, we settled at burger king where we all enjoyed. The street has so many places where you can shop till you drop and we ensured that each of us purchased something to take back home as well as souvenirs.
Our final stop during our travel to Peru was Salinas Y Aguada Blanca National Reserve. This reserve presents a lot of possibilities among them an opportunity to have a glimpse of vicuna, great scenery, many wild birds and animals among others. It is amazing to see the short grasses as well as cacti that are amazingly beautiful. We were surprised that the vicunas usually come so close to the road therefore we had a great opportunities to take some very good up close photos. This reserve is quite massive with numerous rolling hills therefore you will need an experienced guide to show you around. We did a good job of taking as many photos as possible. We had such a great time during our travel to Peru. It was quite amazing to visit the various attractions and I can now attest to the fact that the Peru is one of the best destinations that you can visit in Central and South America. I strongly recommend this destination if you are planning to go on holiday soon but you are unsure of a good destination. However, you will do well to check the weather so that you do not o there during the rainy season.
