San Pedro Sula, Honduras
San Pedro in Honduras has managed to find itself on the number one spot in the world for all the wrong reasons. In this city, it has become normal for the news to carry incidents of murder and homicide. It is so bad that residents and travelers alike are discourage to walk alone after dusk. The violence in this city is mostly linked to drug wars. The city is a transit point for drugs to the US and many local gangs are fighting over distribution rights. Most often there are collateral damages involved in such fights. On average, there are 187 deaths per 100,000 residents.
Caracas is another city with very alarming murder rates. The incidence of crime has been ever increasing until the government decided to stop publishing crime report. Although the government claims to have reduced the crime rate, there is ample evidence that this is not the case. The main causes of this violence are the ease with which the population can have access to illegal weapons and the inability of the police force to properly investigate and punish criminals. Unfortunately, most of the perpetrators of such crimes go unpunished.
There was once a time when Acapulco was the darling of many holiday makers being a beach location. Today, the once bustling holiday resort industry is barely managing to survive due to an increase in crime wave in the country. There have been so many reports of killings on every street such that most tourists will prefer to look somewhere else that is safe. Just like in other Latin American countries, most of the crime is associated with war among drug lords.
Cali is the third largest city in Columbia but also one of the most violent in the world the rate of homicide is so high the local authorities were forced to come up with strategies to lower these rates. While the city experienced short term success, there was a surge in 2014. Most of the crime in this city is related to problems with unemployment and drug consumption.
This is another top crime city in the world and like other Latin American cities; drug is at the heart of it all. The high population density and lack of employment opportunities are huge contributing factors. Also the inability of the law enforcement officers to apprehend and prosecute criminals also adds to the problem.
