5 Reasons While I’ll Choose The Bus To Get Around

Countryside by bus.

With so many different ways to see our planet, you might be surprised that I choose the bus over any other form of transportation. While flying, driving, and taking the train all have their place, there are sometimes when you just want to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Next time you choose to go on vacation, a bus might be the best option for you.

Here are 5 reasons why I’ll pick the bus if I can over any other form of transportation.

1. It’s usually inexpensive

Taking the bus is not only usually the best option when you are on a budget—it might also be the only one. Most buses in Europe, South America, and Asia are not only cheap, but they can get you from place to place without hassle. Trains can often cost as much as flying (hello, bullet train in Japan!), and it’s often worth it is save a few dollars in order to put up with tight seats and sharing your journey with others—which this isn’t always the case.

2. You get to see the countryside

Most countries are much more than the crowded cities which you might be busing to and from. The countryside is often the best way to get a glimpse of a region’s history and what makes it truly unique. Buses can often give you an idea of the lives of daily people. Also, many places have stunning landscapes that you might not know about unless you experience it for yourself. With large windows and just the right pace, buses give you a chance to know a bit more about the country you’re visiting.

3. Frequent service

In a country like Spain, trains might not always run as often as you need them to. As the country makes some huge changes to its infrastructure, more and more people have relied on the bus system in order to arrive at a destination within a reasonable time period. Countries like Morocco don’t even have a train system that runs at regular time—you have no choice but to take a look at the bus schedule and see if you can arrive at a more decent time.

4. You can upgrade

While it might not always make sense to upgrade on a plane or train, upgrading your seat on a bus can be a lot easier and can offer you several new benefits. Larger seats, air conditioning, and even a snack or two is worth the ten or twelve-dollar upgrade. Some buses even have the option of watching a favorite movie or playing games while you enjoy your ride.

5. There’s a possibility to make friends

Like buses on field trips or summer camps in the past, taking a bus can be a great way to meet new people on your travels and to get to know others from different cultures. For some reason, a bus offers more chances for you to connect with others and see where they are headed. Taking a bus can often be a great way to talk to other travelers and see if they would be interested in grabbing a drink with you later.

Taking a bus over other forms of transportation has been one of most surprising aspects of travel that I have found. This view might change in the future, but for now I’m glad that this is an option in most countries.
